...when you see 2 or 3 (or more) immature male flowers bunched together on the internodes or the top growing tip - this is a male, for sure...
This is a great little gem of knowledge to know that helped me out a lot at first personally. It's helpful even if you don't have a scope/magnification or the females are being reluctant to show little pistils.
But like it's already been stated, you have to wait until the plant is old enough to be mature (after alternating nodes have started growing).
