How important is PH ?

  • Hi Everyone !

I'm new to the hobby of growing and have a question about PH. Just how important is it ? Today it has been exactly three weeks since I planted my seeds. Well, I had them in rockwool and germinated for the first two days. I built a small DWC box and I only use rain water in it as well as some Dyna-Grow 7-9-5. My CFL lights run on an 18/6 light cycle. My seeds are feminized auto flowering. Do I really need to be concerned about the PH level ?

Thanks, (this is my very first grow by the way. I've built my grow box and DWC with youtube knowledge only)

Ph is the single most crucial element when growing hydro. It allows the plant to get what it needs when it needs it

How often should I check my PH and what is the best way to do it, etc ? I changed my water yesterday and noticed a little green slime in the water. That's not good is it ?

Man, as much reading as there is out there, and a boo coo of it contains all the pros and cons of not having proper ph control.
So I guess to answer the question, Very Important is an understatement.

Peace and PH'd Grows

test a rare strain in water that hasnt been and watch it die. or at least be stunted then test the water and see wheres its levels are. its not a safe practice. nutrients drag ph down.

Thank you everyone for the feed back. It's been a process learning how all this works especially with this being my very first grow and choosing to use the DWC method. I've ordered "General Hydroponics GH1514 Ph Control Kit" from Amazon.com I watched a few youtube videos and from what I have watched this seems to be the easiest product to use. You guys are awesome !!!

Hey Everyone !

I just wanted to give a BIG thank you to everyone's comments. I got a PH test kit in the mail the other day and I tested my ph and it was way off. I also noticed that my roots where a yellowish kinda color and didn't look very healthy at all. After adjusting the ph to the proper level and now just about 30 hours later my roots are turning white and are looking very healthy !! I've also noticed that my roots are growing way better now. I never realized the importance that ph had. I'm still kinda new at this and want to make sure I'm doing it all right so I have ordered a digital test meter so i can be a bit more precise. THANKS to everyone for the feedback. I can already see that this community is going to be a very valuable resource !!!

Half of the plant problems are related with pH. Check it regularly and you will get time to focus on other issues and help your plants grow better.

I think PH is very important IF u are 1 who uses lots of additives. i for 1 dont belive u need ALL those extras to grow a decent plant. i use distilled water (mostly) & the most ive come up against is a mild cal/mag problem.

I bought a ph meter & a ppm meter when i 1st went hydro a few years ago but the ph meter (7bucks)never worked. the grow went on as planned without it or any problems.

For the most part all i use is floranova bloom from beginning to end just checking ppm's so i know where my nute level is. u can find others that use a base grow nute in veg along with about 5 other additives & turn around & add another 5 or more bottles of additives in flower, on top of all that now u have to add ph up or down.

I think thats when ph is very important cuz u deff need something to buffer all that shyt & get it all working together.

It has nothing to do with additives. It has to do with the plants needing more or less of certain elements at different stages of growth. At lower ph, 5.6-5.8, more of what is needed for growth is available. At higher, 5.9-6.1, it gets more of what is needed for building buds. It's not just something some people do, it is actual proven science. No matter what the nutes or additives the wrong ph can be the difference between a half ounce plant and a four ounce plant.

Your pH levels directly effect how much bud you are going to get and the quality of it. pH and Alkalinity are the single 2 most important things to focus on when talking about nutrient uptake out of the hundred's of things that play a role in plant nutrition.

Hey dear, pH plays a very important role in hydro........Because of its pH, the coco coir proves favorable for the plant growth. So, it is necessary that you continue checking the pH of the soil. The perfect pH should be between 6 to 6.7.
