how many and what wattage of cfls should i use for 6 plants

let me know your ideas, what about flowering??? thinking about hps.. and if so how many watts? and are watts more importyant then kalvins?

This knowledge is simply obtainable by reading threads and grow journals. If you dont know this yet you are not ready to start yet and everyone would recomend reading on the subject first. All this information is unmissable with simple Google searches. Peace

depends how big you veg them too. HPS is best for flowering really 400 watts if you can afford it.

Wats up jhonson, I just finished my first grow with cfls. Now it depends on how big your grow space is but I would say you would at the very least want 50watts per plant. Althought it weed be ideal to use 100w per plant. more lights=more bud. I would use 6 65w cfls

I spent an hour in my local Home depot tonight looking at all the lights, and they dont have shit for cfl, or t5's. all of them are the wrong color temp for vegging. I found one fluorescent bulb that had the right color temp. It has a pin connection and im not sure how to power the bulb with out buying one of these.

HD did have some nice 2' 2 bulb T5 units tho, I wasnt satisfied with the bulb selection. If your looking for bloom bulbs they got ya covered, but couldnt find jack for vegging.

I use 2 x 250 watt envirolites which are the best and still one single 250watt Hps would yeild me the same so of course CFLS suck compared to Hps, absolutly no penetration into the canopy.

T5's are comparable to Hps if you scrog and keep plants short plus have lots but you would need the HO or High Output ones to do this, these are independantly ballasted. Peace

kingrow its all about trial and error i have grown outside but never indoors so going to try thingsout an see what happens, thanks for the info i will check things out..

And then because im nice and hes still wondering i placed some considerations for him which if you read simply sum up cfls, T5 flouros and hps or should i say the main contenders of grow lights (lets forget them crappy Leds for now).

Now i bet once hes done reading a few threads and been like wow thats how much a 400watt hps yeilds but i understand they get hot and i need a fan or like no way them cfls give really loose wispy small buds and i want a yeild the whole street can smoke he will have some more relevant questions like i want a 400watt Hps, what fan or tent or cooltube will i need?? and then he can start pricing some basic grow equipment.

My info was good, sometime you need to simply have a look around Rollitup to see that it is by far a much more valuable grow tool than just questions and answers for in here contains thousonds of different grows from all over the world for all different situations. Why if i type 400watt Hps flowering yeild into Google i get plenty of threads from this site and scroll through a few pages and i have lovely big pics which are worth more than words.

How was my info not helpfull or do you not yet see the beauty of Rollitup as a resource tool? Peace

Then first priority is make the outdoors indoors! So many growers think the soil or ferts or whatever is important, NO! First we make a space or tent and hang a light, we then install (not a cheap or pc fan) decent inline high powered fan and one desk fan to circulate air. We seal the box up and makesure it runs at no more than 25celcius and humidity is good. Only then do we start growing.

Whatever light you get will influence how you need to adjust ventilation and circulation, indoors temps are so important, set your grow up right and never have to worry about these things again.

Again i only have considerations not recomendations, surely the choice must be yours but no matter what soil and ferts you have nothing grows if not in the right environment, 25c max temps indoors rule of thumb. Peace

save yourself the headache and dissapointment and go hps..... i had a cfl setup that had 4 65 watt for each plant and still was no were as happy as i am now with a hps. now i just use cfl for veg

I too grow with cfl's but big wattage ones and 2 x 250watts red and blue for my 75cmx75cm grow room, now it pulls some ok buds but im looking to upgrade to a 400watt/600watt with aircooled hoods thinking of 200gramm plus harvests or 1 ounce a plant for my 9 plants in my 75cmx75cm grow room. The reason i need an aircooled reflector is because its only 1.2meters tall but i already have my ruck 6inch high powered fan and speed controller (wicked peice of gear) so just the light and reflector to get.

Personally i want a 400watt 600watt switchable dimable Lumatek ballast but want to match up with the right and best bulbs. I am reading lots at the moment for few weeks now on wether my tent will keep temps below 25c with air cooled reflector and my ruck on just over half speed or abouts 400cfm sucking power. I just exhaust into my room but its a big room and dosent heat up hardly much with my 500watt cfls.

I have always bought quality and top quality as gives best yeilds. From what i read 500watts cfls (2x250 envirolites) is equivelant to 250watts of Hps so i should rock with the 400watt and destroy with the 600watt, remember this is just a 75cmx75cm grow room still so wattage per square foot for 600watt will be close to 100watt a square foot and quite overkill. Many considerations but still lots of reading and buying grow gear is always a chance until you get it up and running and see its results in person. Peace

Can i just state for the record that i have run many cfls and envirolite kicks all their asses, plug n grow is the same as envirolite so also great. Maxibrite should be called maxish!te when buying larger wattage cfls, look brightish but next to an envirolite they are rubbish, no penetration or yeild whatso ever. Always buy envirolite or plug n grow for 125watts and up, the difference is very noticable. Peace

ok i asked the question cuz every where u look there is different info, i ask on here cuz i want to get actual feedback i want to use cfls just cuz of the low heat i cant run ducting for xhaust and what not my space is about 4ft deep and 3and a half wide and 6ft tall. i just want to know about lights you dont have to get all uppity...i just want to know thats it...this is just a hobby for me i work full time this gives mesomething to do so i dont go crazy, i think its beautiful watching these amazing plants grow.

I wasnt getting 'upitty' its just that your question was so vague.

4 foot by 3 feet by 6 foot tall is a good space to grow in. Shame you cant afford that cooltube and inline fan as this would rock here with a 400watt Hps and seems a perfect space.

Cheap is ok but maybe run some 3/4 foot flourescents along the distance of the room as lighting as oppose to cfls which would take a lot to fill the space and still make some heat. Some 250 watt cfls would do the job too but again at this wattage heat extraction is needed.

You say that you have 6foot of space to work with but this might as well be 2/3foot if flouros and lower for cfls. I think the question you are trying to ask about watts to kelvin is more a light penetration question-

The higher the wattage of a single light source the futher the penetration to lower branches, leaves and ultimatly buds so basically 24watts cfl will penetrate about three inches then the light is too weak to realistically grow much past flimsy. A 400watt Hps will probably penetrate about 40/50cm reasonably well in comparison so you see with cfls you need small small topped lst plants with max surface area and min height, a 400watt will grow you a 2 foot monster all day long.

Kelvin is a measure of the light spectrum where by marijuana needs different spectrums or kelvin for the vegetative phase and flowering phase, easily put the blue light spectrum or when the sun is at its highest in the sky and produces blue light i.e. start to mid summer. The spectrum for flowering is red or when the sun is low on the horizon i.e. the end of summer. metal halide produces this blue spectrum and hps produces the red spectrum, cfls and flouros also but you need to get the 6500k or 6500kelvin bulbs and the 2700k or kelvin bulbs respectively.

Seriously dude there is a lot of info in my posts upity or not, i cannot tell you it all but from what i have wrote there is somthing to do some research into and i have made suggestions for lights even though with that space 99% of members wish you had the budget to get a coolshade and Hps with decent ventilation, a seperate veg room and decent camera so we can see pics of plants and what not.

One final consideration i might make is the space sounds just big enough to have a small veg chamber next to a flowering chamber, that way you can start plants a few weeks apart and constantly harvest. Whatever you start growing with will only be the start, soon you will upgrade to bigger and better. Peace
