The lady and I lay in bed and one or another of our doggies will crawl on top of us and proceed to lick their feet. scratch, etc... We have Chihuahuas/Chihuahua mixes so they're not big dogs but they scoot you out of the way when it's time for them to go to sleep. We're at their mercy. I'm just glad they even let me sleep in the bed.

We have a household divide. Beyond me being a 'dog person', my wife is not a pet person. She grew up in the country and lost a few pets early to rural road-traffic...and most of the 'pets' were of the outdoor variety anyway, so she's not all that hip sharing living space with animals. But I went into our relationship knowing that and it's worth the sacrifice.

Also...we work about 45 minutes away, so it would be cruel to a young animal to be unattended all day...and even when older not really fair to basically leave a dog home and lonely all the time.
