hi people monkz here,
i started growing big bud 2 weeks ago and the plant seem to be doing well. i have 4 at the moment. i was just wondering how many plants it takes to make about a kilo of weed. also how long does it take roughly from seed to harvest because when i bought the seed it said flowering weeks: 8-9... does that mean 8-9 weeks total or 8-9 weeks in a flowering state? pleaseeeee help meeeee!!:)

hey monkz, a kilo of weed is quite a lot of plants, i vegged for about 4 wks on 1st grow and got approx 2.5 oz dried per plant ( a key is @36 oz), and some friends who grow sog aim for about 1/2oz - 3/4oz per plant. other sog grows here may have different expectations, idk.. i guess outside you could get far far greater yields, but it's a lot of plant/plants either way.
as for "flower" time, that does NOT include veg/growing time, and only refers to when u have 12hrs "daylight" or less, and usually refers to a hydro grow too, which is probably quicker than most soil grows.

im using 4 100watt fluorescents and keeping the temperature at 21degrees celsius,
iv read that the average is about 3-5 ounces is this true?
any input would be great!!!

3-5 oz. is a lot. Are you growing outdoors, because outdoors that's very possible, but it would take from spring to fall to yeild 4 or more oz. Give us a little more info as to what your plans are. For instance: What kind of grow, what kind of nutes, vegging time. That kind of stuff.

hmmm
so the strain im using is big bud as i said which as u probably know has one of the highest yields,
im not aiming for the s.o.g. method because that would be a waste of my time,
i was looking to veg the plants for about 6 weeks before i put them into flowering and that should last another 8 weeks...
as for nutrients, i bought miracle grow but have not used any yet as my plants are only a few weeks old but i heard that diluted urine provides better nutrients for the plant, is this true?

I have read a lot of claims from breeders/seedbanks about the yield of Big Bud and a number of grow reports I have read some people do get as much as is claimed or close to it but usually they have massive lighting and do a hydro grow. You said you have four 100-watt fluorescent lights and maybe I am old fashioned but I never put much faith in fluorescent lighting. It lacks penetration as the plants grow so your lower parts of the plants produce little. You get a bunch of popcorn at best.

Unless you have room for a good number plants and the lighting to give them I think your yield expectations might likely be a bit more than you will get even with Big Bud.

I am not sure what to tell you about how many plants you would need with your setup to get the yield you want but if I were you I would scale back my expectations a good bit so you are not disappointed after you harvest and dry your crop.

It always feels better to end up with more than you expected instead of shooting for the moon and ending up not getting close to it.

Also as was mentioned the time/weeks given is always flowering time so you can add your veg time/weeks to that.

You said you keep the temps at 21 degrees Celsius which is 69.8 degree Fahrenheit and in my opinion that is a bit low. I know some people feel that about 70 degrees Fahrenheit if good but I like things a bit warmer myself. I like things to remain around 75 degrees Fahrenheit which would be 23.8888889 degree Celsius but that is just my opinion based on the luck I have had so I would see what the consensus view is on that part of what you said before making any changed based on what I alone said.

I would start checking out the trichomes at about 7 weeks. Just an extra day or two and they can change from being milky to amber and then you’ve lost some of your high so it would be good to start checking around the shortest flowering time so you don’t make an error that costs you quality.

thanks all for the suggestions n support...
like i said earlier i have 4 plants at the moment but im looking to clone a lot so that i can end up with about 20plants...
surely that will be enough for a key?

im gonna grow about 20plants with a 600watt hps instead after taking the advice given on my initial incline towards using fluorescents...
will this produce a kilo???

for 20 plants you're gonna want upwards of 2000 watts of lighting. Dude just do your homework, and don't expect anything really from your first grow. Good luck

maybe i'm making an assumption but you seem to be aiming for a magic figure. i dunno if this is your first grow, but i feel that you should not think too much about growing a key.. just enjoy this grow; do a lot of research, observe your plants closely and get to know your strain and your environment. plan you next grow based on what you learn in this one, and then you will know what you are aiming for and have great chance of geting there :)
