How to salvage moldy bud and get a great tasting smoke

And yet it's still not very clear to me. You say 7 years of input as if this is a highly responded to thread but there's only 3 pages of replies. Some ppl say yay and some say nay. I just want to make sure I'm not putting myself in danger. If you don't wish to actually give any input then you don't need to respond at all.
Shows a basic lack of interest by RIU members. Most don't find themselves needing to know.

I get that maybe it's not that big a deal to them and they can just grow another batch or maybe it's not as expensive for them to just buy another qp. But from where I'm coming from it's pretty expensive for me and I can't grow, so I'd like to know if I can salvage this and be able to smoke it safely without risking my health or my friends health that want to smoke it with me.

Doubt it'd be tasty. Just really hope there's some chance of not having to trash this. The more I read about it the more it seems impossible but goddamit a man can dream can't he :'-(

That sucks, sorry it happened, but you're better off starting a new crop immediately and buying some if you need a buzz in the meantime.... Seriously, toss that moldy shit.

I have been in this 'soaking' process for about five days.

The first few days, the water was just cloudy, murky, and the color of strong tea. The color and clarity HAVE been improving.

I don't have much in 'cool' but have a dark place I am keeping it.

My query:
The LAST couple days, when I go to change the water, there is a white filmy substance floating around on or just below the surface. Like the ghosts in the TV shows. It is barely cohesive, and sort of flies apart or disintegrates if I touch it. I pull it off with a brush before doing my routine drain, rinse and reload.

Is the white film the mold FINALLY letting go and floating to the top? Is it something else?

The water is getting rather colorless, but is still somewhat cloudy. And not a lot of things floating in it.

Thanx in advance for any feedback.

The only feedback I have is that if your weed was moldy then toss it out.

Quit screwing around with this soaking crap and start a new grow. You'dbe half way through veg already.. Unfortunately, there is no salvaging moldy weed. Period.

There is a commercial cannabis rinse agent on the market, it works best with dried bud...,google it.

I inadvertently smoked some moldy bud from my last year's grow (turned moldy in mason jar) - extremely irritating of upper/mid airways, shortness of breath. This made me inspect it closer and noticed they looked a bit brownish, not the original deep forest green. This is what prompted my google search that brought me here, hoping I could rescue a nice jar of GG#12.

I don't see how any of the solutions in this thread would work cleaning these buds from the mold I think they have - they all sound quite disingenuous to me.

It's also important to note that just because spores are everywhere doesn't mean you can smoke them, and eating mold (via edibles) is definitely not the same as smoking it - even then it is still not advisable. Your lungs don't have the acidity levels in your gut that takes care of such nasties. These are not the fungus that make your cheese taste delicious! Your lungs don't do well dealing with mold and fungus. There is plenty of literature explaining how bad this can be, just one here.

Bottom line - cry a bit and compost the flowers that have gone bad, enjoy a new grow.

The colors don't come thru very well in the photo - but you can see a slight brownish tint.

Moldy buds tend to crumble more easily than normal buds.
If you suspect a bud is contaminated, give it a little squeeze.

I had a whole crop go mouldy on the plants about 30 years ago. I used a similar method. Didn't look so good but a wicked smoke
I smoked it for 3 years
I'm now 74, no health problems

Also another question: would it be better if I don't cut the buds from the branche so that once I use water curing on a large bottle then I can hang the branches upside down?

Without branches to hang them then how would you dry them?

You have to be pretty hard up to mess with moldy garbage. Moldy garbage goes in the trash can not in you lungs. Weed is cheap now so people can just buy a bag of good weed
