Hydro DWC Northern Lights first grow

Hey guys, this is going to be my very first grow. Ill list all of my equipment. I should be able to start as soon as the seeds arrive.

400w HPS
4 - 5 gallon orange buckets
4 - Netty pot lids
5 - Femenized Northern Lights seeds
4 - 6" air stones with tubing and pump
3 part nutrient system
2 fans

I think it should be a good first grow. I have some buddies who are helping out as well who have grow knowledge. Pictures to come as soon as things get moving.

Still waiting on seeds, but the HPS light came in. Man that thing is bright as hell!

How long does it typically take for nirvana?

I need to work on ventilation for the room still, but besides that everything is ready.

Yeah ventilation of heat was my biggest problem in a closet when I first started. In my new cab its a bit easier. Is that Tin Foil around the seedlings? If so be careful as hot spots from it can burn your seedlings. From everything I've read if you can't put mylar or panda or something similar around them, then painting it white is better than tin foil. Looks to be an interesting first grow though!

I read somewhere on here that the dull side of aluminum foil works fairly well. I put it in there because I didn't have mylar at the time, but I bought some yesterday so maybe its time to re-do the box. It's a bit too small anyways.

And as for the ventilation I think I am going to cut a hole in my closet door, put a fan/carbon scrubber to let out some of the hot air from the closet into my room. After doing some heat tests the room was at about 80* with no ventilation and just a fan running. If I put the fan in the door it should be good to go

Wow, 80 with light and just a fan running is awesome. You should have no problem running with just one vent with carbon filter.

lol, yeah i've been all over NL for the past year. Last year was my first time trying it and it rocks. Great little bushy plant to grow too. Small in stature, good producer under CFL or HPS, easily trainable, and forgiving on nutes. Its going to be one of my mothers because the smoke is a perfect smoke for body aches or sleeping problems. I'll be watching this grow as they are a lot of fun.

nice i love nl i have a 20+ year old version rightnow bout to flower . one thing i noticed is that you should pic the pump up off the floor. and sit it on a bucket. it will be last much longer this way.

I just read this today as well, I will be moving it as soon as the hydro system gets going. One of the NL's has popped, it will probably be ready to transplant tomorrow.

Re did my grow box with mylar, and put the northern lights in there. I'm counting this as official grow day 1 - 10/3/10

mayday, it looks like 2 of the seedlings are dieing, very sad moment.

Quick Update:

it's been two weeks since I planted the seeds and man what a crazy two weeks! After one seedling got a bent stem, i had no choice but to throw it out. Of the remaining three, I don't know if I could call any of them "healthy".

One has a large root system, but in the past two days the first set of leaves completely dried up and shriveled away. One had some roots chopped off when I was transferring them to the hydroton, and has been yellowing and sickly looking ever since. The third one actually looks half way decent, but the root system is still very small.

This one has a medium root system, and is easily the healthiest one.

Do you have the water line to just touching the bottom of the rockwool? Thats how I started mine and they have exploded.

Also I germinated my seed in a papertowel and went to the rockwool right away. Once the seedling got about an inch high i put it into my DWC... saves the stress from having to transfer the plant.

Make sure they are getting lots of air bubbles (what i have been told is the smaller and more quantity of bubbles the better.) PLUS the biggest thing is to make sure you check your PH!! Do not let it get to high or it will harm the plant. I have also read several places that rockwool has a natural tendency to raise the ph. I usually have to adjust mine the day after adding new water and nutes then its good for the rest of the week.

Here is the long awaited update! After many problems including algae, heat, nutrients ph, and any other problem you could imagine, my room mate and I threw those peices of shit in the garbage and started again. THANKFULLY Nirvana was generous enough to send us another set of seeds for free ( Thank you NIrvana!) And we put them in the hydro. Soon after more problems arose and it almost felt like we had the brown thumb, but thanks to some help from my buddy TheWaiter were back in business

Here is the whole setup, we added two fans and now the room is around 75* with the lights on.

Here's the big girl on the bottom right, about 4 weeks old from seed. TheWaiter helped me top it and it's looking great and smells like ripe grapefruit. For being so little it stinks!

This is the twins Mary and Jane planted at the same time, but much smaller. Still Looking and smelling great though!


This is a clone off THeWaiter's plant, looking healthier everyday! Bagseed, but very hearty and growing good
