Hydroton as top layer of soil

I was wondering if anyone has used Hydroton as the top layer of plants that are in soil. Not mixed into the soil but just used as the top layer. Are there any negatives to using it? I don't have any issues I just like the way it looks and mainly just want it for decorative purposes. Would be an added bonus if it keeps the soil from drying out as fast also

There aren't any negatives. It doesn't float, which can be a plus...

I do it with house plants. It's more decorative then anything.

Do you think a 10 liter bag would be enough to fill say 5-5gallon air pots about 2 to 3 inches? Appreciate the info

I don't know. I'd figure a 1/4 gallon each pot.

I sometimes fill the top 2 inch helps disperse water evenly well hand feeding anyway

I do it to spread the water with out floating my perilite.
