i do have one question for you fdd, when i was 13 or 14 i overheard my cousin talk about this guy who got injured really bad because you was blowing glass and inhaled by accident

exactly how bad would this be, please elaborate

i hate orthos.
when i was 18 i tore my acl, lcl and, rcl, in one fall (nice huh)
this was however, a common injury for my family, we all have bad knees...
but where i was going was at the time, they wanted to surgically rebuild my knee, and after talking to some of my cousins that have had the same procedure, i opted to wait it out and see how things healed up. im glad that i did, though the healing process was long and brutally painful, (12 months before i could walk unassisted) today im glad i never had it done.
i feel your pain man, nothing sucks like a bum knee.... stairs are the enemy

i think thats more in traditional glass blowing like vases and big pieces were you gather glass on a big metal pipe. if you inhale all the burnt glass fumes it can kill you, and thats no fun

i think maybe there talking about inhaling the 2000 degree exhaust, it would scorch your lungs, and you would drown pretty quick in your own pus. nasty way to go

Give him a break, not everyone can be as up-to-date on their glassblowing lingo as you fdd. I understand what you mean macdady:bigjoint:
it was an honest question. does clear glass burn? i know when i over heat it in the torch it boils, but i haven't seen it burn. he was speaking of "fumes". it would have to "burn", literally, to give of any fumes. UNLESS it was colored glass. that's a whole different story.

i have only been doing this a year and really don't "know" a whole lot about it. i have been hearing about "the health issues of glass blowing" a lot lately and would really like to find out how all these rumors started. there are 1000's of people blowing "art" glass. it's not just for pipe makers. i want to know where all the dead glass blowers are and how exactly did glass kill them. if it really did.

seems like a rumor to keep people away. there are A LOT of guarded secrets in this industry.

so please, if you have actual sources i would love to read them. honestly. it concerns my health. :)

Speaking about blowing art pieces, in lahaina on front st. In Maui, there's a art glass shop and you can watch the dudes blow glass through a glass:) pretty amazing stuff.

All glass no matter clear or color, puts off heat or "fumes" when torched. Ever held a hot piece in the sun and watched the heat fumes coming off the shadow? Or put your hand next to a hot piece and felt the heat coming off it? Thats what hes talking about, call it what you like. If you are blowing out a pipe, then inhale, hot air or 'fumes' will be breathed into your lungs. I believe when he used the term 'burnt', he simply meant glass that is being heated, not literally burned as in ruining colors that have been overheated.

there is a HUGE difference between hot air and "fumes". HUGE.

thank you.

i can't really do "custom stuff" right now. when i try to make something i screw it up. i like to let the glass tell me what it wants to be.

i'm pretty much fully stocked on supplies right now. i just need to get my knee fixed so i can stand behind the torch longer. :)
Well just letting the glass tell you what to do and well, just making it... sounds custom enough for me. I think I more or less meant a specific type (ie: spoon, hammer, side-car, etc.) as well as picking my own colors. If you got everything you need then that's cool. I'm willing to pay :) I just figured I would try to help out before just purchasing a few. I noticed at some point, you had said $35 shipped. That's a pretty good deal.

I don't know if you do this already, but I'll pay up front for "custom"

My wife really wants something similar to this

And I want a hammer that has the colors of the one in the middle here...

Thanks for checkin it out and considering it bro.
