I've used FFOF on and off for years. The same with Happy Frog. I've never gotten mites from it. There are literally thousands of people using it without getting mites from it.
Sounds like you got some crappy old bags from that hydro store that recommended you use Strawberry Fields because it's more airy. They probably had it sitting outside in the rain for a couple years. Take it back and tell that "Dude" at the hydro store you want your money back.
There are also what's called soil mites and are harmless to your plants so if you're finding mites in soil they are not the kind that feed on the leaves of your plants. Go ask the Dude at the hydro store. He'll tell you.
The Oribatid mite is actually beneficial and assists in breaking down decaying organic matter. I'm sure the Dude down at the hydro store will confirm that. Most of those Dudes have degrees in Plant Science and Soil Biology. He's probably got a PhD. That's why he's working for minimum wage as a cashier.
