I've always rode atv's and dirt bikes. I'm now looking to ride a road bike. I only have a grand or so to spend so I was wondering what you guys think?

My budget will be bikes 1980-1990 year models (in my budget)
I like honda shadows
Viragos are cool
I also like Seca 750's

What do you guys think...
are these bikes too small?

I think you are one the safe path to riding on the road , its not always wise to hop on the larger bikes until one has passed the riders test , large bikes fail on the test most times not as they are not as nimble and beginner friendly . But then again it depends on the riders weight too as often there are really big guys forced to ride smaller bikes while breaking there weight limits set by the Engineers . In this case one will want a larger bike to begin with for safety and comfort .

I rode everything as well when younger , mopeds , minibikes , 3 wheelers , quads and dirtbikes but once riding on the roads I started on a old honda shadow sporster look alike , rode that and a Buell to hell and back before stepping up and buying a Hog , but to be honest at times I miss the little bikes I had lol

will this be your first motorcycle? dirt bike do not count. the size of the bike does not matter to any rider. a small bike can get you just as easily killed as a bigger bike. Im 37 now, and have been around bikes since i was 16. i used to ride the streets (sportbike), then had too many close calls for my liking and went track only (road race on a closed circuit courses--mid ohio race track, grattan, gingerman, VIR, Daytona, blackhawk farms, barber, road atlanta to name a few). did this for 6+ years all over the mid west and down south. got out of it last year during a race as i almost hit a metal guard rail at 120 cause my rear tire spun up. i used to race 1000cc bikes, but found a 600cc bike to be much easier to handle and more forgiving.

granted cruisers and sportbikes are not in the same motorcycle class. but they each have their ways to hurt you very badly.

get a bike you feel comfortable on, take the MSF class!!!!!!, wear your GEAR (ATGATT!!!--lid, jacket, leather above ankle boots, gloves, riding pants). and look it over mechanically (brakes, tires, chain, head stock (tripple tree bearings), wobbly wheels from pot holes/curbes, oil leaks, fork leaks, rear shock play, swingarm play, ect, ect, ect.

i miss my old race bike. 2007 gsxr 600 fully race built!!! 15k into the bike.

Funny you mention the road vs the track. The track is waaaay safer!
I ice raced for a few years on everything from a DT 400 Cr 600 and Yz 426.. Most fun I ever had!

I have been riding since I was a kid, my war wounds speak volumes.

You gave great advice, Gear Up!
Kool Kids riding squid, no lids, no leather are far more prone to
get hurt, even a small dump can and most often ends in road rash.

I want to get back on and ride in the worst way, I bought my boy a bike
and he loves it. My wife is supportive so it is a major plus.

Between sleds, trikes, quads and bikes I have learned to respect the machine
and keep myself safe, but I still find myself taking risks just to crack it open and
go. Just cant beat it.

So OP, get something modest, and in good mechanical condition. Gear up for your own safety
and don't cheap out. The road is dangerous, more times than not it is other drivers who are watching for
cars and don't see the bikes around them.

I was thinking a shadow 500 or 750 would be good for me at first. Not in the market for a Harley. Maybe after I ride a while mi agree with all of you about safety. I am concious of all of the risks and dangers.

I wish I had 3 grand for a bike righ now but I don't. Maybe I will save up for the future but I want to ride this year!

i really like the looks of the Hondas. I don't want a crotch rocket. Just a cruiser.

A shadow is a nice bike, nice ride. The size means less than your comfortability on the machine.
They will both get you A to B. Choose what is the better fit for you.

much have already been said, so I stick to a few things I learned out of experience, don't go to small, it sucks to have a 400 ccm or less, with a passenger, a few bags and the wind against you and you end up not being able to keep the speed limit or atlest not have any power left to be safe (IMO 125/250 ccm is for city`s) go for a +500 ccm

and according to one of my best friends (who is a MB mechanic with own shop) the Yamaha Virago models is one of the best models for his business, in other words, its one of the most common bikes to break down, so I would try to stay away from them, and should you decide for one anyway, go for a 535 as a minimum the 250cmm is not wort shit, I rather have a nice scooter then

shadow is a nice bike and a sure choice if you want a "chopper" would be my choice if I where looking for a cheap bike with that style

another sure bet is the Suzuki GS500E one from 1998 and up is a nice little bike that is big enough to do most (tho I wouldn't go cross country on one) and is cheap and the technology have been around for years so it hardly ever break down and parts is also pretty cheap, a nice beginner bike who can follow most bigger/faster bikes with out being to much to handle

just my 2€

Sounds like you are on the right path brother. Back in the 80's Honda's 2 cylinder Shadow model was a simpler/cheaper version of their power house Magna. I had a Magna V65 for many of years and she never got old :)

just be warned a cruiser is just as dangerous as a sportbike or harley or even a dirt bike. its not always the rider, but the countless other cages that do NOT pay attention to motorcyclists. thats why i went track only, then racing, then selling everything and now i grow. lol ive been in 5 motorcycle accidents since i was 17. 2 when younger with NO gear on, and i got pretty rashed up. the last accident was racing. i had a horrific highside, was thrown in the air 15', same with the bike. i was ko'd for 10 minutes and was rushed to the ER. concusion, bruised and swelled up L hip, both shoulders, broken clavical, bruised knees, bruised neck. and i was in full race gear (top of the line gear-1500 suit, gauntlets, race boots, chest/back protector, ect).

bottom line, make sure you have health insurance and be cautious around cages, and other riders your not familiar with. wear your gear. and its not IF you go down, its WHEN you go down.

this is not to deterr you from riding, this is just a heads up on whats to come. shit, i might even buy another bike, but i cant controll myself. as soon as i see a corner rated for 25 or so, i hammer down, drag a knee and apex out. thats why i no longer ride. lol

I also like the honda nighthawk. I want one of those or a honda shadow. Do you guys think these are good bikes?

as I said before, I think the shadow will be a good choice, in my book honda have always made quality bikes and I never heard any bad thing about the shadow, I also like the design a 500 or 750 ccm would be a nice starter bike, on a budget go for the 500ccm in better shape, sucks to have a 750ccm in the garages with a broken sumthing that cost 500$ then better have a 5 year newer 500ccm that runs

and as already mention, even a cruiser is`t the safest place, sure you wont go 200mh (unless its over a Clift) or from 0-60 in 3 but your still out there, no car door or air bag, and your small and not that easy to spot for other drivers, biggest reason for accidents in my part of the world, just behind 22 yo kids on 1000RR bikes is 60yo granddads that have`t been driving for 20 years and is used to a car and cant get in to there heads that other car`s have a problem spotting them or if they do, participate how fast they are coming/accelerate, take it slow, look forward and be a step ahead, and don't take any chances and never trust others to keep the law or spot you, wont do you any good after a 18 wheeler have crushed you

I am having my bike re-fabricated this year due to safety issues , I ride a FXLR and it is one of the fastest nimble Big Twins ever made but the bike is a chopper straight from the factory with a decent rake and a 21 " spoke rim . This whole front end is not the safest but its a cruiser built to handle and the sportster front end worked for the engineers and board members .

I parked it last year the day my friend McOne died due to a bike accident at 35 mph , he was not noticed and hit by a truck . The accident caused ribs to splinter and puncture his heart , he died shortly after this crash even though all on arrival at the scene thought he would survive the ordeal .

My bike is being setup to be safer than before but still I will always ride defensively while keeping my fallen brothers in mind .

Other than owning a dirt bike as a kid I have absolutely nothing to add to the conversation other than WEAR A HELMET!!

I shake my head every time I see someone out on the expressway on a bike weaving in and out of traffic with no bucket on. What is the appeal of this? The wind blowing through your hair? Buy a blow dryer instead. Much safer.

Your brain being splattered on my windshield would suck too.

Funny thing is, I kind of agree with you on this. If people choose not to wear a helmet on a bike, or a seatbelt in a car I don't think big brother should force you to. BUT, I think people riding a bike without a helmet are mildly retarded. If you value the wind blowing through your hair more than your life then you aren't playing with a full deck.
