Ionizer

Hey everybody,

This is a post pertaining to those individuals that are doing small grows. Whilst looking through my house for small extension cord I came across an Ionizer that hadn't even been opened yet.

It is as follows:
Bell & Howell Ionic Whisper 7842 from iKitchen.com

I hooked the baby up and is keeping my single plant completely odorless, and even though I didn't pay for mine, it is pretty inexpensive for how well it works. Just wanted to share this with the community.

Ionisers are magical. I run a couple of them; they not only kill scents but will also kill many pathogens like mould spores and bacteria in the air.

However, there's 2 main kinds of ionisers or ozone generators; corona-discharge types, those which make ozone with a high voltage (HV) potential between a couple of electrodes, and those which have special ultraviolet (UV) fluoro tubes.

Corona discharge types create nitrogen oxides, which combine with water/humidity to form nitric acid- your very own home-made "acid rain!" Corona ionisers also attract a lot of dust and dirt to their electrodes, making them OK air cleaners, but the contaminants quickly reduce the efficiency of the device. Corona types require frequent cleaning. However, they are much less expensive than UV type ionisers.

If your ioniser doesn't have a purple glowing fluoro tube in it, it's a corona type. Corona ionisers will definitely work, if you keep them clean. However, I'd harbour some concerns about acid damage to leaves if the thing were left to run in a grow room 24/7.
