Is it Possible to Profit From Creating a Cannabis Strain?

For a person living in a US State where it's legal to grow for recreational purposes:

If a hobbyist managed to breed to the point where they had a stable hybrid plant and made feminized seeds, is there any way to legally make money from the creation? And, what would that entail? It seems like I read an article once that suggested it might be possible to patent cannabis strains. But, I don't know if that would be the approach to take.

If it is possible to make money from the new strain, what about the creators of the parent strains? Could there be circumstances where you would need to pay royalties?

Thats what a lot of “ breeders “ do … swipe a good strain offering from an actual worked line , put a little lipstick on it ( minor cross or just repack of S1 ) and give it a stupid foodie name or something.

There is a small breeder line ( forget name ) that ACTUALLY uses mephisto strains and cross it with some strain and call it a new one. SAD.

You know what im sayin. Greenpoint and their suspect strain photos bs is another. They got called out on them … prettied up with photoshop with blues and purps. Currently running some and not very happy with that Stardawg part of mix. Rather lanky , thin stems - narrow flowers. Might just cull them .

All of there strains look to close to be coincidental.
But The Deputy was a good one.

I haven't looked at the seed/strain scene for quite a few years. There's always been a lot of shady practices out there involved with seeds/strains - so I'm trying to get caught up on who's legit and who are the scammers/unreliable. But of course the name made me question legitimacy but after looking at the website, it set off all my BS detectors. The color altered photos being forefront in my mind as being suspicious (other than the name of course).

Self Grow Dispensaries do it all the time. Cross this with that and give it a cool name without giving any information on the genetics. Ive seen some wild names on medicine and clones that arent listed in any libraries that I knew were grown in the building out back. If there is a profit to be made there is a person to do it.

I'd say a dispensary growing is different than selling the actual genetics

So much diluted lines. I try to target landrace for basic experiments- sensi used to sell Rudy strains for those that wanted to start from scratch.

Think about it …. How hard is it to get an original blueberry or BD …

Just do what half the outfits are doing. Chuck some pollen. Call it anything you want. Heck you can call the same seed run a bunch of different names. Setup a website to sell the strains. Accept bitcoin. Make a bunch of fake instagram, strainly, and other social media accounts. Hype the strain like there's no tomorrow using all of those accounts. Post the website address everywhere you can. You'll get people fighting to give you $30 a seed for your pollen chuck. Waiting on the next seed drop or whatever.

Legally? No. Marijuana and it's seeds are illegal in the US.

You can have the best strain in the world that few people know about, or a above average strain with great hype; you'll always sell more seeds with the latter. Hire a hype man with some rep if you wanna profit.

I was on a hunt recently to find as old of an original line of Northern Lights as I could find - and settled on Pyramid Seeds for it. I had no prior experience with anything from Pyramid Seeds but they seem legit ass far as being carried by major seedbanks and I couldn't find much derogatory about them. So far, it's growing so vigorously, I'm kind of wondering if it isn't a hybrid... It's too young for me to say anything about it yet with any confidence - but I'm hoping it ends up really being from some of the original strains of it and not anything too hybrid/different.

Chuck some pollen on a killer female. Make sure the male is some what of good genetics. Sell them beans on strainly.com. I see other pollen chuckers do that. Otherwise it would probably take years of stabilizing a strain. Then getting a seed bank to pick ya up. JM2C. I personally don't do that though. Just seems like kinda of a hassle. Sorta like trying to create a new Brand of a vehicle, then trying to sell it.
