Always invite the dead....
Actually this is probably common in many countries.
Where I'm from, Eastern Europe (Serbia) it's common practice.
You would have to leave a window open to the living room to invite.
When one of my Grandparents died many years ago in Serbia, my aunt left
bread just like what is pictured and a glass of wine next to it on the kitchen table
in the living room with window open and the next morning when she woke there
was a bite taken from the bread and a sizable sip taken from the wine glass.
Another time, she went down to the basement and observed lit candles floating
in the air.
