Journal #2 - Back After 5 yrs ! - Mystery Seeds

I use the paper towel to. the whole point of it is to make sure the seed is viable before you plant. i would stick with what you are doing

Wait for it to form clusters of balls to be sure.

Keep in mind the 2 week stretch is just starting.

I start seeds directly in soil.

All my latest seeds have popped no problem in a moist paper towel in a bag after about 2 days. If they are good viable seeds they'll pop super easy

Right and if they are not there is no guessing why it didn't come up. if it popped in the towel and doesn't come up you sucked up lol

The whole good viable seeds thing is a tricky one, I've got a stock of seeds... might as well explain the story in a bit of detail. Many years ago (5 - 6) I worked somewhere that was a warehouse for returned items that were then resold. We got shipments from all sorts of companies, stores, distributors, etc, etc. Well once we got a shipment from a big name courier company (apparently after 6 months of holding items that aren't claimed - they get sold in contents sales) So we made our way thru this shipment and one day whilst everyone was out for lunch it was only me and another guy in the back. We found a sealed cylinder, it was a manilla shipping tube I'd say ~6" diameter. We both found it odd that both of the ends were glued, not only that but it had a really weird ship to address and a return of BC.... Well shit, we wanted to know what was inside...coworker cracked the tube as hard as he could against the desk and *POOF* FULL of Weed, and i don't mean nicely packaged buds, this was jammed in almost like someone had trimmed and dried and just used the shipment for the "cure". I don't know how much was in the entire tube, we managed to put just over 2.4lbs into my trunk before people started to come back from lunch and saw weed everywhere. Was a smoke friendly environment so we just shared what we found (other than what was in my trunk).

From that batch of stuff, it was RIDDLED with seeds, I can only imagine hermie'd and shipped but between me and my friends back then we've got easily a few hundred seeds. So as bummed as I am about this male plant, and even the seeds that haven't germ'd I'm going to put even more in a bag and just wait till I have a bunch then into 12/12 and off we go again !!

Since this is going to be ongoing, I'll continue to use this thread for all my "adventures" from this point on !!

Day 6
So...no pics on this update cause quite frankly they're just depressing to look at. This plant as I said yesterday, has more balls than a men's change room and yet stinks like a high times champ. I'll take some pics a bit later again just to show some examples of early male pre-flowers. Looking back, it was a good idea to hit 12/12 early, I'd be super pissed if this plant was 60 days old then flower. Still none of my new seeds have popped so I will be trying some others today, I really want to try my last Hindu Kush seed but too worried it won't pop either (it's 5 yrs old) not to mention my other HK plant(s) either died from my noobness last go round and the one that grew beautifully was also a male. So far I've grown out 3 plants in this small setting and I'm batting 33%, that's TERRIBLE.. 3 plants 2 males. Feh, stupid genetics...This would be a perfect argument for feminized seeds, but it's also giving me invaluable experience learning the hard way.

Anyway's, I'll drop some ball shots on ya'll a bit later, have a great day !!

FT, DUDE, its not a waste! You see that node that swelled up like you supercropped it, but it just happened naturally, b.real said something about silica or something? That is a very strong plant right there! let that thing develop the balls till they swell, then take it outta there and collect the pollen.

Do this, and i BET you will be thanking me after you plant some beans made with it.

Yeah, I'm not going to be cutting this one down just yet. It's not going to pollinate anything so I'm not worried about it. I had actually tried to keep some pollen from my original HK plant to try to breed but then life got in the way lol. This time around, i will also collect some pollen from this plant, you are however 100% correct and it's part of what makes this pill harder to swallow. The plant is SUPER healthy, I mean I can only hope that any and all plants that cross my path end up even partially as strong and I'll be good to go !! Can't exactly breed w/o a female but patience is a virtue !

As previously stated today is germination day !! Here's the run down for those following along;

3 x in paper towel/zip lock on a shelf at my window
5 x in paper towel/zip lock (not sure where I'm putting them yet)
5 x Experimental Method (In a cup of water till any sink, then they'll be placed in a cup of ProMix)
3 x 8oz Cup w/ProMix already in the 12/12 environment

I know, I know, that's a shit ton of seeds that I'm clearly not capable of growing out...or am I....if for some MIRACLE all 16 pop they'll fit into the cups and happily into my cabinet till they can be sexed and the males murdered (culled sounds too nice). The reality of the situation though is that the majority of these buggers won't even pop and so out of 16 I'd like ~10 in hopes of 4 females more or less.

Dont worry, i went through 4 males until i got 1 female. Plant 3 seeds, run 12/12 from seed hope for a female or two

Here's a little sumthin, sumthin for the lady plants out there....

The last picture shall be titled... "A New Hope" aka the 3 seeds germinating in promix inside the cabinet. A "true" 12/12 from seed !!! lol

A new hope, blah! Should be The Grower Strikes Back.

The bud will be with you, always.....

And besides, it could be worse. Like having the biggest bud in your flower room go completely to seed. lol

Day 7

Well what can I say...balls, balls, everywhere balls !! So far i'm still batting zero on germination lol total pro. Guess it's telling me a lot about this seed stock I've held on to, I just reallllllllly want to see what a properly grown female of this strain is like. Since I've got literally NO CLUE what the buds even like and I still have 275 seeds to try out. So come hell or high water I WILL grow a female of this strain !!!

DB - It could ALWAYS be worse amigo, always !! It's more like Cannabis Strikes Back ... next will be Return of the Grower ... perhaps if this strain name doesn't exist, I'll dub this set of seeds Ewok Bud lol

Good morning anyone still reading !

Not going to be bothering with a picture today as I'm sure everyone's sick of ball shots. The only change in the plant is a bit more stretching, just over an inch vert but it was more you could see the spacing between nodes get bigger.

I think me and germination are no longer friends...Still nothing new popped....oh the agony lol

The seeds in question are ya roughly 5 years old give or take. What's match boxing ? You've piqued my interest, I tried to float 5 of them in a cup of water to see if they open and then they go into paper towel. Plus I have a bunch being done the normal way.

All ears though !

I have never had to do it myself, ive kept old beans in a towel for a almost 7 or 8 days once to get a root. But one thing ive seen folks talk about is taking a small match box, the ones stick matches come in. Line the inside with course sand paper put the seeds in and shake shake shaaaaake the baby.

pop em back in the wet towel, wait 3 days, no root, shake shake shake the baby. Back in towel 3 days, no root? abort and you just saved yourself some promix..

Very interesting, I also googled it and I do believe at this point I'm down to try anything. Later today I'll try to find a match box or something equivalent and give it a shot with a few new seeds as well as a few that are already in paper towel.

Fingers Crossed I can get quite a few to pop, I need the best odds possible lol I'm not sure if I can pull it off but I'd love to get a clone once I have a female but going from 12/12 they may be too small to get it right. I'm going to get a rooting powder/gel in the next couple days and practice a bit on my male I think.

You could always top it down to the second node and root the top if you don't get side branching. I keep my plants so close together i rarely see a side branch. I took clones from my plants 2 weeks into 12/12 and they already had flowers. You can see the results. The one i am lsting is a star, the indica mommy is meh, the clones in flower are mutants, but that my fault. Just as they were entering re-veg, i tossed em back to 12/12. Reminds me of when we get a really hot January and the trees start budding. The clones in flower are flowering nice, i even see resin! im just wondering if they are going to get any taller.

Day 39

So I know better, but this is making me slightly confused. I'm figuring it's just wishful thinking but I'm seeing what I'd normally call pistols however only in the top part of the flowers forming. I dunno like I said wishful thinking, feel free to chime in.

As of this morning I found 1 seed that was slightly cracked open and after much reading I decided to put it straight into soil. Appears a lot of the old timers just go straight to soil just like mother nature, requires patience but it's something else I'll test. So now I've got 6 seeds in promix inside the box. Time will tell !!

Apologies for the less than stellar pictures but I'm sure you'll be able to see what i'm talking about with them. If not let me know and I'll add some arrows to point at what I'm talking about.
