jumpstarting early veg

one problem that i continue to have is it seems like whenever i transplant from clone to cup or from pot to pot it takes way longer than it should for the roots to expand and growth to start again. when i transplant i rarely have to water because the new soil doesnt have roots to take in water, but i think not feeding for a few days until they need it is depriving the inner roots of water and the plant of nutrients, so what i was thinking is should i be using a very aerrated soil like roots organic straight from rockwool so it dries out faster allowing the roots to expand faster, then only go to a heavier mix when im going to big pots and there is already an established root system. i just wanted to see if anyone else has felt lke they were having this problem and what they did to help it, im asking this specifically now because im late for outdoor season and dont have clones or seeds or anything yet and i want to try and not waste any time once i get them planted.

I usually end up in a position of root bound plants when I'm transplanting so In my experience my girls always take off right away when moved to a bigger pot. I used to have stalling of growth when I used a really hot soil mix for my rooted clones. Once I switched to a no nute peat/perlite mix for my young babies never had a problem again. I personally start in solo cups and go to 1 gallon then to 15 gallons. I personally wouldn't start and finish in a container smaller or bigger than around a gallon. If I put a clone into a 15 gallon pot, I would be too confused about when to feed/water because the dirt would probably not need watering until after a month of growing in the oversized pot. I have a friend who goes from solo cups straight to 15 gallons and he seems to be doing fine though.

thanks for the quick responses guys! ive got some plant going in 4 gals as well and i was thinking about transplanting them soon before they start flowering, but i need to keep my plants under 6 feet or else everyone can see them, and i know all strains are different but generally how big could i go and with topping and supercropping keep under 6 feet

I'd go solo,1g,3g to flower and go hempy retaining res. from last pot. Keep em reaching and they will. Top-lst and keep em down.
