What is it about PVC that makes it bad to use for growing?
I have PVC materials in my cabinet such as pipes & fixtures could I have a problem in the future (although the partition that is constructed with PVC is not in use yet)?

Thats good to hear buzzsaw, lookin forward to seeing you get set up, my 5x10 tent started flowering today

Hey loveit, HID lighting and PVC do not go well together, the HID lighting was causing toxic off gassing from the PVC in the tents, it would kill the plants. Iv heard stories about the rancid smell, always worse in the mornings before the lights come on. Apparently they would burn all the crap off after a couple weeks and work alright, but why risk it. There was a huge recall with all the reputable companies, but its not like they destroyed them, they sell them in bulk for cheap and other companies sell them under different names.

Theres still a few floating around so just be careful when buying tents that they contain No PVC. SecretJardin and Homebox are the 2 most reputable companies, IMO. I use homebox XXL, and have never had any problems.

Now Im worried, is it PVC & HID lights in specific? I have PVC fixtures & fittings in my cab but no HID only a 400W HPS. What do you think.

I run 2 carbon filters, one for passive, one for heat. Works great, odorless grow. Depends on what size lights and style of grow you do.

My homebox XXL is a 4'11 by 9'10 basically 5x10, I run 2 1000w HPS in the tent with 6" aircooled hoods. I only use 4x8 of the tent, each 1k light over 4x4 space. 32 pots total. I only use the 4x8 so I have about 2 feet at the far end of the tent to put some ocsillating fans, one above and one bellow the canopy. Airflow is Key.

With the 2 filters I have enough pressure, going through that leaks in the tens are good for me, they just take in fresh air, so I leave the bottoms unzipped all the time to increase airflow, it works out real well and never smells.

Im adding c02 in 5 days, which im stoked on, gonna start flowering off with a Bang. This makes that extra space for me very impotrant, once you pack everything in there, you want as much airflow as possible.

3 gal pots work out perfect for me, I buy the cheap blow mold ones and throw them away after. with the 3 gal I fan fit 16 plants in per 4x4 area, with a couple inches of space to get airflow between the pots.

This is pretty much what I got for my tent, I think thats it....I have an big AC, and some other lights set up for a veg closet too, but this is just for the tent

2 - 4" flange size carbon filter (11lbs of carbon) about $99 each
2 - 1k HPS 6" air cooled hoods or cooltube
2 - 4" vortex fans for the filters
1 - 6" vortex fan for the lights
2- HEAVY DUTY extention chords(for the lights)
A Shit Load - fans, oscilating fans, etc
A Shit load - extention chords
20' of 4" flex
25' of 6" flex ducting (maybe more)

Aluminum Foil Tape! (for ducting)

Then you need all the little crap to make it all run, timers, fan controllers, thermostats, TAPE, lots of Tape, hose claps....

I think thats about it. You could always go smaller, but thats no fun now is it....

After you have all your stuff in there its a good idea to lay out all your pots in there, and set up fans, have space for fans...trust me on this one or you will regret it later.

Good luck

HPS is HID. HID means high intensity discharge lighting. MH, HPS, MV are all HID.

Honestly Im not 100% sure if pipe fittings would be affected, I know lots of people have PVC fittings in hydro setups, and PVC fence posts. I wouldnt be to worried, but you could ask someone in the hydro section if your really unsure

I know several growers who had some bad times with the PVC bullshit that was happening with tents early on.

What I've been told (and I could be wrong) is that the combo of HID's and PVC causes a reaction that causes a gas-like bi-product to form and it's extremely harmful to your plants, causing death.

I just found out about this recently after somebody warned me. Luckily I bought Secret Jardin tents. They have no PVC and use a metal frame. Sturdy, air tight, light tight, tons of ducting ports. I couldn't be happier with the Secret Jardin tents.

That's interesting. I've heard that about styrofoam but not PVC.
