Scrap the idea of getting an hid, they are unpredictable bulbs, which might be broke when you receive it, it could blow at anytime, there not guaranteed to last there life cycle.
They are expensive to run, and you have to buy additional extractors to control the heat...
There a complete waste of time and money.
Go for a 600 w led you should get 1 for around the same price.

let me call mcguyver and get back to you...
you can hang it bare, you don't HAVE to have one, but a 600 produces a pretty fair amount of heat, you're gonna have to have a couple of fans running anyway, one just over the tops of your pots, and one basically blowing right on the bulb, preferably upwards away from your plants.

i would use your t5s for veg, and in the mean time, see about mowing a few lawns and buy a 6 inch extractor fan and ducting, because you're gonna need it. i run a 600 in a ducted cool tube in a 4x4 and on hot days it will get to about 80.
in that closet with no ventilation, its gonna get to about 120

I can leave my door open, can’t I?

dude, you are taking every shortcut a person can take....don't expect to grow much, and don't expect it to be exceptional. you get out of it what you put into it, and you aren't putting much into it.
it seems like you want me to tell you cutting corners and half assing it will be ok. you can grow weed in dixiecups under a sink with a cfl...but it'll be shitty, and there won't be much or it.
if its a hobby, just have fun with it and try different things, see what works for you, but don't expect it to be high quality, and don't expect it to make you any money.

I never planned to sell this stuff. This isn’t a business scheme for me, it’s a plant I’d like to enjoy without having to buy from other people. I never expected the quality to be grade a or to walk away with lbs upon lbs of bud. I’m a parent, and I keep as much money for my kid.

Don’t mistake my desire to remain practical with corner cutting. My question is will opening a door into a well ventilated, air conditioned room be harmful to my plant? If you don’t have a proper answer without feeling as though your experience makes it okay for you to feel entitled upon delivery, then good on you. Just try not to quit your day job and ever become a teacher of anything at all, really.

But thanks for all the advice. Just know your audience next time before making assumptions.

And I am having fun with it and taking a few unorthodox turns, but I want input from anyone (not just you) about whether or not this was going to ultimately kill my plant and how my plant was looking. All the input has been great so far, and for that, I’m happy and thankful.

Don't be so defensive @Roger A. Shrubber was just trying to help you get the most out of what your growing. Remember it might be for personal use but your gonna have either a fire, or your whole house and kid smelling like weed not a good thing to send them to school or daycare smelling like. Second you'll be wasting all that money in energy to what, grow a plant you may or may not get something useful out of? I have kids, I put money away to further expand and grow( no pun intended ) my rooms to make them better, safer and overall more efficient. Get the the right stuff it'll be better for you in the long run.

HID's are a complete waste of time and money? Really? Tell the guys with big indoor grow operations their wasting their time or the tens of thousands if not millions of people using HID's and getting huge yields of high quality buds. Nothing wrong with LED's but saying HID's are a waste of time is incorrect.

My kiddo doesn’t attend daycare yet, and I’m at home with them all day. And while growing this plant is something I’ve decided to do, it’s really not on my list of most important expenses. I was just asking if leaving my door open, to air it out and let the air move more would be okay enough to do? I never planned on a fire or even putting myself or Family at a risk of one? I am aware of hot those bulbs get, but controlling the heat in the closet seems fairly achievable without having to purchase the exact same set up as someone else, you know?

Also, I’m not sure it was a big enough deal or should be to anyone whether or not I take their advice verbatim. To assume I want anyone to tell me anything just because I’m trying to find the most accommodating way for me to grow this plant (and really, anyone can grow anything however way they want) comes off as a little too aggressive for a forum about growing weed. What I was asking was a simple question. Besides, I’ve already said that I was happy and grateful for the advice I alreDy did receive. I just don’t actually know anyone here personally so, myself, I wouldn’t really speak to a person as if I did. It’s just an etiquette thing for me.

So what your saying is you asked for advice got some you liked and some you didn't no biggie. Still smell should be on your top priorities. Especially if you rent or close to other ppl. It's true you and anyone else can grow anyway they want but you might as well get the most out of what your growing. As for the door being open no it won't do much to dent your heat plus your return vent will suck up all that stank and again have the stank all throughout the house. The best bet is getting a cheap extractor fan an filter and create a negative pressure inside said closet this way the stank won't leak and temps are controlled.

Haha in so many words, yes that’s exactly right.

It does seem that the consensus is definitely to get an extractor fan in there, so I’m definitely going to look into it. I wouldn’t know if opening a door would help, but thanks for the heads up.

I do have a minute before I start to flower, so I’ll look around and check with my local store for sure. Thanks man

She will grow better under lights.
The sun hasn't got as much power at this time of year.thats why most plants if not all harvest October time.
Lumens from the sun drop as well with the change in the Suns degree angle.
Get her in put her under some lights and she bush out a bit better.
I don't know where you are in the world but unless your Southern Hemisphere this is the only way to grow this time of year.
It could be 30 degrees where you are but intensity has faded from the sun.
Everyone knows you sow in spring and harvest October.
The sun at this time of year is weaker but will still be better than any light.

That’s what I always thought. But I believed in that because I’m an avid vegetable gardener and have spent a lot of my time focusing on gardening outdoors. But it is so that my plant isn’t as bushy as I would have liked her to be by now, especially in comparison to what some have shared here. However, I have read that black jack is a pretty lanky and less bushy strain.

It can be from the strain.

Using a lot of blue light (6500k) or bluer helps make busier plants.

You will create light leaks with the door being left open.
This is the problem with hid lights,
You don't just need a light u need fans, extraction ,exhaust all to control the heat.... Waste off time and money.
The sun at this time of year is weaker but will still be better than any light.
it wasn't just about strength of the sun but light hours as well.you don't even get 14 hours of daylight this time of year so why would you.

Yeah really? I can do 3 grows with led compared to your 1 using the same amount of electric.
Less chance off heat stress for beginners.
Once this happens tell me how you correct it then...you can't and you now have a shitty burnt plant.
Wind burn is common with using hids.
Heat is more expensive to extract.
With a fan on my leds peak at 25.6c,
The perfect temp, I've just gone and saved myself enough money to get the next seeds in or even more nutes , an example.
You and all these thousands of peeps that use HID you are wasting your money.
HID are more detectable with police infra red detectors( a proven fact)
More people have been busted using HID.
Listen the problems are endless with HID...
