I would top her in veg mode as soon as you have an identifiable crown at the top. This will prompt the plant to grow more sideways. Also, avoid pots that are tall and skinny. Those pots will tend to make a plant grow tall and skinny too.

It is smart in your case to work backwards. If you have just 40 inches vertical you can guess that your plant will double in height while flowering. So you will want to already be flowering when she reaches 20 inches.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Use short plants (indica dominant, low stretch), top once from the 6th node back the the 4th node and flower early.

I have 2 mother plants , in 5gal dwc each, both are now 10-11 weeks old from seed. I trained them around the top of the bucket. Neither plant is more than 8"-10" tall from the top of the bucket, there are appx. 7 or 8 main side branches each with 5 or 6 tops on it, I now have about 35-40 tops i can take as clones, off each plant. Once the height hit's around 12" i cut back all tops to a lower node, usually 6" or so and let the node below the cut become the top and grow out. I'm starting to see some of the bonsai traits, the leaves are growing in smaller when full than they were originally.

So far I got them topped they stand at about 8"
the bucket seems like a damn good idea too

So do yall think a Scrog would also be good. I got that patients. And I've always wanted to do a scrog
Seems like it should help keep them low?

LST in a circle.
I have thought about trying something like that in the past but wondered how it would look.
Got any pics of something like this
Like this, it's pretty much how i train my mother plants, I'm not totally sure what the numbering is all about. I have each one in 5gal buckets, they are about 8" tall with somewhere around 30-40 decent tops on them. I've heard it called C.O.B ( circle outside bucket) but don't think it's a widely used term.

I believe this thread used to have these pic, but seems like the pics all got lost..still good info to read.

He showed when to top..then let the 2 tops grow to about 16", then bend them down and around the edge of the pot

Maybe the numbers are like for the branches??
But it looks super cool probably take some time to get the circle but probably worth it

Check the link I threw up, has more info.

More bud sites and evenly distributed growth because you redirect the auxins in the plant. (The thing that makes the plant grow up towards the highest point of light)
