hard to work with for nice edges

Well ...Guess what I'm doing right now ....
I'm using a really fine sandpaper ( > #1000 ) and working on the edges ....
Ohhh ..Nice smooth edges ...Shinny alum and silky PET ...No ..I've different opinion about that ...
About the edges thing ...It is needed a bit of time ,sandpapering them ...
They get really smooth and nice ...
And it is really strong material ...
It kinda "binds together " the whole box ...
That 's the "feeling " I'm getting from it ...
But,clearly technically speaking ,it is a fine, light and really rigid material ...
Now ,that I've discovered it ,I won't 'forget' it ...
I 'm really liking it ...

Some other parts ...

-Hanging equip / lid securing bolts ...Maritime grade alloy 316 Stainless steel ( M6 threaded ) hooks..
Rest =Hex M6 bolts ,nuts,washers from tool grade stainless steel alloy A2 .
(All washers-screws-bolts used ,are made from A2 steel . )

-Neutrik simple XLR ,to cut down initial cost ,just a bit .......(maybe later will upgrade the connector ...)

-2x 80 mm 48 V ,0.05 A fans ....
China made ,greek guy the owner of company .....
What a combo !
Nevertheless they really look quality made fans ...
(plastic looks way different from ordinary cheap fans ...Let's see about the motor .... ) ..
Anyway ....

Stardust - love what you're up to, tho I must admit to not having read the whole thread - a little outside my skill level. Question for you, but first a little background. Last year I got a 400w (real draw 320ish) solarstorm from CA lightworks through their grower feedback program. I set it up in a 3x5x8 sealed bathtub area. My hope was to eliminate the portable ac (I am in a very warm climate, heat/humidity always an issue). Well, turns out this thing puts off heat big time. I think like most consumer panels, there's a fan on top that pulls air through the top, over the heat sink, and out two of the sides. I went to lowes and picked up three pieces of register duct; one big one for the top and two for the sides and vented the whole thing outside. I have a six inch inline fan pulling air through a ceiling mounted carbon filter, then pushing it though the top of the panel, and out the sides. Ultimately, ain't pretty, but was able to get rid of the portable ac and I've been very happy with what the light can do as long as I manage the canopy for good light exposure (scrog) and cut away most of the understory, otherwise I pull a lot of larf.

...So, ahem, back to my question.... All that work got me thinking, why even have a fan and heat sink? With the 400 cfm blowing through there all day, things can't ever heat up. Seems like the heat sink is a big expense, and to get rid of the fan and heat sink may make more room for chips and drivers and make DIY led panels a little less complicate for the Everyman. Sorry for the war and peace post, just wanted to give you as much relevant info as possible. Could an led panel function without a heat sink? Basically becomes like an hid air cooled reflector. Just a shell, byo fan.

Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sleek, efficient design. And it looks cool, I like the pot knob because I'd feel like I was turning up the awesome if I twisted it...

It's the same fan that I was using for venting my room and good air exchange. Now it's doing the same thing but also cooling the light in the process. Most people need a fan for venting their tents, closets, basements, etc. Having one (or more) for the lights and another for venting seems redundant.

The SS400 will put out 365 watts of heat:)......to clean up your "cooling" system follow this guys design http://www.ledgrowlightforum.com/diy-heat-exhaust-manifold-for-the-solarstorm-800-t201.html it will be more efficient with the shortened tubing and it's cheap!!!

Pretty slick, thanks. It'll buy me some headroom. I see that he recently heard from the company that they're working on an external venting option. That would be nice.
