I just purchased this cheapo ring light from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031AQ302/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
It has taken my shots to the next level for sure. I don't even have a good macro lens yet, but the Canon T3i does a nice job with the stock 18-55mm.

Pictured are Subcool's "Querkle" and Reserva Privada's "Silver Kush". They were grown 12/12 from seed in soil under a 400W CMH bulb in a Mother's Keeper tent. Pretty small setup with about 2 to 3 plants harvested every couple of weeks.

They still have about a week or two I'm guessing. I took a sample of the Silver Kush and it is extremely potent. I don't like how it messed with my head so much; very disorienting. Maybe I'll have to smoke smaller amounts in the future. I've never had a bud frost up quite as much as that.

Every Querkle I've grown so far (5 or 6 total) have turned purple if I let it go long enough. I can see it starting to purple at the very bottom of the buds, so I'll let it go for a while longer to make the full colour change.

No, the light ring is just another photography tool. It provides excellent lighting for macro photography.
You definitely wouldn't want to use this in your dark period.
