There's a bold new political and cultural push on in America to make everyone dependent on government.

You don't need guns to defend yourself and your family, just call 911.
You don't need to prepare for disasters, just call 911.

You don't need to worry about paying for health care yourself, just call 911.
There isn't anything government can't do for you.

That's what we're being told.

We're all going to live in brand new utopian world, according to the swirling rhetoric of Barack Obama and the shrill demands of Hillary Clinton. We'll just tax the rich, then the rest of us will be on Easy Street. All our basic needs will be met. We'll live in a just and fair society.

It's amazing so many people actually believe this stuff – especially after social experiments like this have failed miserably over the last century – resulting in massive suffering and deaths numbered in the hundreds of millions.

But believe they do.

I'm not sure there's any way to reason with people who are intellectually dysfunctional – whose own greed and envy motivate them to resemble the French revolutionaries far more than our own American revolutionaries.
Having said that, let's try a little shock treatment.

While you read the rest of this column, please listen to this audio of a 911 call placed by Brenda Orr of Doylestown, Penn., last month when the multiple sclerosis victim's bed became engulfed in fire.

Remember, Brenda didn't have a choice about relying on government. You still do.

Panicked by the flames, she did what Americans have become conditioned to do in any emergency – call 911.

Even though 10 dispatchers and four supervisors were on duty and no other calls were coming into the emergency center, a county government operation, no one answered the call for 28 seconds.

Then Brenda was immediately put on hold – despite her pleas.

Another 26 seconds passed before a second dispatcher put down his coffee and picked up the phone.

You can hear the torment and frustration in Brenda's incredulous voice as she speaks her final words about 30 seconds later.

While that phone was ringing six times, there were 10 people on duty capable of answering it. They all failed to do so. Their water-cooler chit-chat or their Internet surfing was more important to them.

None of the dispatchers or their bosses were fired. That's the way government protects its own. This is the reason people love government jobs. Government employees are really the only ones protected by government.

This horror story is a metaphor for dependency on government – whether it is for your medical care, whether it is for your family's safety or whether it is for the way you renew your driver's license.

The reason no one was seriously disciplined in the emergency center is that this kind of service is not unusual – not in Doylestown or anywhere else across America, especially in major urban centers. You've probably experienced something similar – hopefully while in less dire circumstances than Brenda Orr.

Dependency on government is the opposite of freedom and responsibility. In the long term, it means tyranny and slavery. It inevitably slides into massive death tolls, as it did under Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, et al.

I didn't know Brenda Orr. But I hope and pray her death is not in vain. I don't just mean that the people of Doylestown, Penn., will get better emergency service in the future. I mean I hope her story wakes up Americans to the reality of what dependency on government really means.

Jesus, the trash you hang out with, for shame. Do you even have one ounce of humanity? BTW, you ever call a credit card customer service rep. I'll guarantee you'll wait longer than 28 seconds, the corporations you so adore are not any better at serving those that aren't trying to buy something, and even then they'll put you on hold.

Great article Vi,

LOL!!!! Leave to our illustrious med to compare a Governmental entity which is funded by tax dollars to a credit card company's customer service department.
That is quite a stretch even for med!!!
The primary reason for 911s existence is to respond to emergencies which threaten life and limb.
Med have you ever had a life threatening credit card emergency?????
Holy Macaroni!!!

I think his point was that in the end, even 911 is a bunch of people answering phones, and there is bound to be mistakes. Let's hear some stories of the thousands of people who had their lives saved by 911 calls last night.

I agree with you ViRed, the UK is the same, I see the corruption in our government and the way they cover up for each other, they(UK gov.) seem to think that every single problem that arises can be solved by raising taxes, my wife and I work hard to keep up with the constant demands for more and more money for one thing or another giving most families no chance to accumulate any kinda savings rather just living hand to mouth. keeping everyone in debt. seems to be their goal.

It's a fair comparison. No I've yet to have one, came close in 86, thought my card had had a heart attack, no more credit. What happened in the above article is inexcusable. But one person does not the government make. I agree that 911 operators should be extremely vigil as there are life threatening emergencies, but you are trying to make it out to be the whole government that is that irresponsible, sorry charlie, not biting.

Vi, your saying this all for not, but it will be a democrat that wins the national election.... I'll drop $1,000 on it.... Put your money where your mouth is Vi.
No one really trust's the corrupt "so-called" conservatives anymore.

there are some folks here who seem to be missing the point entirely. THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT YOUR SAVIOR!!! depending on government agencies to feed the poor, to heal the sick and to defend you in times of need is to give up your independence and lay aside any semblance of personal responsibility. this is not a matter of republican versus democrat or conservative versus liberal, it is the nature of bureaucracy to be inefficient and indifferent.

Good and valid points, under!

A simple fire extinguisher within reach would have served poor Ms. Orr far better than 911.
A modicum of self reliance and corresponding preparedness goes a long way!

Yes, and it is the nature of the corporation to be indifferent, callous, ruthless and non-benevolent. They exist for only one reason, Profit. When the country is being run by corporations (as it is now), there is no accountability for the environment, the employees, the community they reside in etc. They are gross poluters, unmerciful slavedrivers, and care not what happens to anything around them as long as the almighty bottom line gets it's fix.

You're right, Dank. As I've clearly said in another post ... I believe Obama will be our next president. I also believe the Democrats will keep control of congress and the senate. With that in mind, I also believe we will enter into warp-speed in our travels down The Road To Serfdom.

you're all welcome to join me here under the ice. it's a bit chilly, but it's still better than tithing an outrageous percentage to the first church of barack.

hell, i'll even make room for those misguided souls who vote for the son of a bitch. i figure that the lesson learned from that mistake might educate them enough to qualify them for some menial task.

Everyone interested in this topic should read The Communist Manifesto by Marx ans Engel. Ideally a communist society relies on everyone in that country, including politicians/industry and so forth, to contribute everything for the greater good of the whole. From the meager farmer to a robotics engineer for example. Sounds like a wonderful plan and many ppl beleive it would work except for one small factor that destroys the entire foundation. Greed. If there was only one person in the whole scheme who took more for themselves then there would at least be one person suffering from that greed. Could there be only one person in an entire system like that who was greedy? you bet your ass not. Thats why communism fails 99% of the time. the only leader I can think of who has come the closest would be Fidel Castro. Yes, he's done alot of things to his people that may seem neglectful and downright unfair. But, keep in mind, FREE medical care, food, and most of the necessities of life are provided for them. I am not an advocate however so please dont chew my ass for telling you these things, lol.

the U.S. Government is very close to the brink of creating their own type of Communism in which the weak (you and I) depend on them for everything. Do you think they will dole out all the wealth/food/power and whatever else you can think of evenly? I think not. How would politicians ever get elected without their billion dollar election campaigns. That money could easily go to developing new medicines and vaccines. feeding the poor, taking care of the disabled and ensuring that the poor are in no worse position than the middle class, the middle class are in no different position than the upper middle class and the upper middle class are in no better position than the elite. EVERYONE would be equals in all ways. Think it will ever happen? The word utopia exists because no one ever truly reaches that plane of existence, no matter how fat their wallets. Those ppl should have a little heart and humanity, have some humility and help out their fellow brothers and sisters. there might come a day when they need some help themselves and since they are "better and richer" than me, I may be a little reluctant.

That poor woman. Could have been one of our mothers or grandmothers. God rest her soul.

I can see you get it. People helping people, what a concept, but nooo, we can't have that. How could the greedy bastards survive if they actually had to help people. It's like if you're walking into a 7-11 and you see some "Bum" sitting on the curb, hand him a 5 spot. I know, I know, he might go in and buy a jug of wine, but at least you gave him a choice, to eat or get fucked up, who knows, if he's hungry he just might buy some food. I believe in charity and I have a few that I donate to, geeze if you send one 20 bucks, the rest of your life there will be letters coming asking for donations, the worst ones are the ones that send you a check and ask for the check back plus more money. I just cash the check as I think that is a shitty way to ask for money, the last two that I cashed the checks, never heard back from them again. Charity should be voluntary, But we need a strong safety net for the disenfranchised, the mentally ill, the handicapped, only a government can supply that.
