I think that you could even do well with a 250W, that's 27W/sq ft. If you land in the 25-50 range you should do well. Remember more watts = more heat if that is a concern. Good luck with whatever you land on.

400 HID is perfect for a 9 square foot room. That is 5,000 lumens per square foot for MH(Veg) and over 6,000 lumens per square foot for HPS(flower). That is more then enough light for that room and you will be able to control heat and get lights closer then with a 600. For any room larger then 9, say once you get to 12 square feet and above, use 600s.

I would personally use a 600 but like Rancho said a 400 would be very easy to control the heat with.

Yes, or go with a 600 if you can properly extract the heat, if not, 400 is the way to go mh/hps
