On a small grow area like that (4 x 4 x 5), even a 400w maight be too much...mostly because of the height. Your HPS light should always be at least 18" to 24" above the plant, of which, your plant will probably outgrow. Can you raise your ceiling? If so, you could step up to a 600w if your height is at least 7'. Good luck... Peace

yeah, i can raise the ceiling, to about 8ft, what might be too much? too much heat? or light intensity? i got a decent vent, i can regulate the temp pretty well.

How do you regulate the intense heat put out by a 400w or 600w hps? Go to your 8' height and use retractable cables/chains to change your light height as she grows. What Red said is also a wonderful idea. Peace

Too much heat will generally be more of a problem then too much light. I have an adjustable 600 W hps. In the cooler months I can run that light on full power at less then 12 inches from my canopy. Atm I am running it at 75% within less then a foot of the canopy. The logic is in the inverse square law with respect to independent cannabis light tolerances. Too much light is not common. Now, heat is another satori (lol). :peace:
