MH doesnt put off quite as much light as HPS but close (will be fine for veg)

A 5x5 tent with a 1000w HPS is good but a bit under powered if you ask me. Most ballasts will run at 1100 or 1150w which would be better. You can put a 1000w in a 4x4 though and that is really your ideal amount of light.

I run a 1000w double ended HPS with a sunsystem air cooled hood (the only hood on the market that will allow you to run a double ended bulb in a tent, any hood that blows air directly over the bulb is junk and will reduce output big time). Double ended HPS put out 20-30% more light than single ended. And i run mine at 1100w. So to compare my setup to the standard 1000w hortilux, its actually like im running about 1400w worth of light in my 5x5.

I always say a minimum of 100w per plant and a general rule of thumb but it also depends on how well you spread your light and how well you get it to the canopy opening up your plants and keeping them small and bushy is always the best way to go rather than have them tall and the light not reaching the bottom...

Thats interesting to see. The sun system air cooled double end hood really is superior to anything else but it does like to be hung pretty high.
That’s why I posted that. I was very close to acquiring an AC/DE to try but if you look closely at the numbers it all (as usual) depends on your situation. For my situation I needed to compare the SE AC to the AC/DE and when you consider the SE can be run a lot closer to the plants and take into consideration what the numbers are on the SE run at 24” vs the DE at 36” or more it really changes things. I just couldn’t justify the expense as the AC/DE is not cheap and I will not have the height needed to properly run a DE in an open reflector.
