Lights to avoid

HPS = high pressure sodium, it gives off a red spectrum imitates the sunrise/set during fall/winter. Use for flowering.
MH = Metal Halide, this gives off a blue spectrum imitates daylight. Use for vegetative growth.

Flourescents gives off blue spectrum that is why some people use this for vegetation.

And no they don't have a ballast at the base its just a simple socket, and the bulb is a tube with gas inside and when given power those gases light up.

Hey dude, fair question, sorry we lost you in the talk.

HPS=High pressure sodium
The rest you got right, although, HID could be referring to a HPS light or a metal halide light, or more often referred to as mh.
Peace

Would someone please give us noobs an idea of what those mean?
HPS?
HID- This one is High Intensity Discharge...like a streetlight?
CFL- Compact Florescent? The ones with the ballast in the base
CLF?

I just want to know what light unit will be best for a small grow...???

Yeah,.. So I read the thread, seems like I owe the store an apology for flaming. But, knowing me I wont.

I know I shouldnt bud with CFLs but my budget isnt allowing me to buy a HPS system. Nor is my grow... I dont know what to call it. I just plant to stuff at least a dozen CFLs in the little thing.

are you talking about the smallers cfl's, 23w i think? you can use 200w or 250w grow cfl's quite effectively. check ebay, this stuff sells loads on there. plus you can get a decent hps for cheaper too! which would be better than cfl's no doubt

Actually, I believe they do have a minature ballast in CFl's

Self Ballasted Compact Fluorescent Lamps
Easy and simple to use - all in one unit only requires mains power suppy for operation. These have integrated ballasts which are not earthed.

correct, my fault. I was just thinking about clf bulbs where they don't show a balast but 4inch tubes do have them.

The bud may be just as good vid...there just isn't gonna be as much of it in a CFL grow as there will be in an hps/mh grow.

But ya know what? In the long run it all depends on whether you want to grow only a few small plants...(CFL)

or whether you want to grow a room full of plants. (HID)

some here seem to go on and on about efficiency...and hey...they may be 100% right...because face it...CFL's *ARE* designed for max-efficiency/max energy savings...

and hey...if THAT is your concern...and THAT is your only focus..by all means... grab ya a small box and slap a CFL in there and have at it. You may very well get a GRAM A WATT...but to spend 4 months growing 26 grams is fuckin' pathetic/shit ass growing..I don't care how efficient it is "energy-wise".

And hey...so ya saved $5 on yer electric bill? BIG DEAL!! But wow....damn... in the same timeframe...ya spent $500 (or more!) on WEED! Does that Math work for anyone else here?

Plainly stated...A cheap electric bill was NEVER a reason I started growing weed. And you?

so hey...whatcha say we drop all of this "better" talk and just smoke a fat joint of that CFL pot, bro? After that, we'll smoke a fatty of mine.

huh? what? You're out?

didn't you just harvest last week?

I'd like to point out, its been said previously, that vegging under hps lighting causes stretching. Obviously I do not agree, and here is a pic or two of one of my plants, it is 2 weeks old, mazar is the strain (of course) and it is 5" tall, and has 6 nodes already. I've taken the liberty of including a tape measure in the picture. Besides being extremely tight, it is exploding with growth.
Peace

but videoman you can do that under a mh and keep it really cool like low50's and the plant woundn't stretch at all but be really nice and compacted but huge sun leafs making bigger buds.

Mh would be better for sure, I agree on that. I do not know about getting bigger leaves on this strain though, and the buds are already huge.
Also, why would I want my temps in the low 50's?
Maybe I'm just too cheap though to buy a mh light. lol

i'd add 15 halogen bulbs. they rule.

I agree with what everyone is saying about the whole CFL vs HID stuff.
Personally when growing indoors I use CFLs cos I only grow for myself, so I grow 3 or 4 plants at a time max.
I have always had excellent results but this has a lot to do with the excellent seeds that I started with.
I think that everyone gets real hung up and stressed on the right hardware to use and forget that the most important part of any grow is the plant its self, not the gear you use.

Shit seeds = shit weed no matter what lights you use.

Also all this jibber jabber about lighting and getting angry is losing sight of the fact that we all smoke green cos we like to chill, not fight, thats for dickheads.
Everyone is also forgetting that no matter what light source you use, you can dramatically increase the THC production of your plant by including a UV bulb in your grow. (note: UV, NOT blacklight)
