Looking for Guidance on making Rosin with my press, and turning that into Vape Oil

Why don't you use the rosin to infuse glycerin and fill the carts with that ?
In my understanding, this would make an eJuice which requires a different type of cart than oil?
There seems to be debate as to whether PG and VG (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin) are healthy to use.
However I suppose that mixing it with flower rosin could indeed be one solution, albeit not considered really pure/solvent-less.
If my understanding is correct? If doing this method, is there a specific tek you recommend?

Good old instapot, pun intended :eyesmoke:

Not vaped alot of cartridges so I'm not sure what type you'd need, but if I was going to make some I'd try this first for sure.

Vaping pure rosin is a job I'd leave to Puffco imho but I'm old school and know next to nothing about cartridges :peace:

I've been making concentrates for a couple of years now using cryo-ethanol extraction.
I also have a rosin press, it also makes very nice dabbable material but it also contains a lot of waxes and fats that make using a c-cell problematic.
Because you will need to winterize using ethanol, it makes more sense to skip the squishing and just wash with alcohol.
This will give more info on the process: https://extractcrafter.com/

Hi GBAUTO, thanks for your reply. I had a good look at that blog and the articles seem to be promoting a 600$+ machine in the USA. As good as that might be, I don't think it is the solution we are looking for at the moment.

We do hope that with the right approach. good vape oil can be made without winterizing by ethanol. In this thread, there are a couple of teks mentioned that have worked for others (from Future 42000 board).

Have you personally tried to make vape oil from rosin and if so, did you try the teks in this thread which have worked for others?

@Arkos not sure at all, what you are reffering to about instapot.
Instapot, crockpot, slow cooker. Excellent for infusing with. No need to destroy your weed in the oven either for decarboxylation as the slow cooker will decarb while infusing.

Brilliant info at that extract website,
I'd like to add one thing if you doing alcohol extraction.

When you've washed your material you can place the jar/beaker in the sun for and hour or two and most of the chlorophyll will evaporate that way you're left with amber colored oil even if you used trim.

All the Source or etoh does is recover the alcohol for reuse.
The process for making the concentrate is the same-wash the material, filter and winterize the wash and then evaporate the solvent.
What you're left with is cannabis oil with all of the cannabinoids from the flower.
I use a huni-badger to dab my extracts on the go as well as a nice dab rig at home.
I don't use any thinners/pg/vg, so I can't help with those questions.

chlorophyll is still in there, all the light has done is bleach it.
The best suggestion would be to use a technique that doesn't extract the chlorophyll in the first place.

Don't you need specialized equipment for that ?

A deep freezer is all I use.
My home fridge/freezer would get the tincture down to -10degF and works fine for small batches.
The primary benefit of colder temps is that it allows you more work time washing/draining the material before the solvent temp rises enough to allow the chlorophyll/water to dissolve.
I have a simple 5 cu/ft freezer that will stay at -30 degF that I use for my larger washes.
Technique is where the magic lies.
I do use a large Buchner funnel and vacuum pump with a 2L flask for filtration because I'm running a gallon of ethanol/wash vs a quart most home users would run.

Thank you for sharing you experience and techniques @GBAUTO I for one am definitely investigating further based on your info.

The whole alcohol extraction route is a bit beyond me at this stage. Not sure where the instapot comes in (in place of the machine in that article). Deep freezer, buchner funnel, vaccuum pump... It all sounds good but I just wanna make some vape oil and have a rosin press... I havent found clear instructions for what your reffering to on the website you sent -- it just advises to use that "genius" machine they sell while deriding other methods.

Bottom line...to make vapable extract you need to remove waxes and fats from the extract.
Winterization is the process that does that.
Again, all the Source or etoh really do is RECOVER the alcohol.
The real magic lies in the beginning steps.

I'm just gonna quote Graywolf here, say no to bro-science...

"UV light or sunlight, which breaks down the chlorophyll into Pheophytin and allows the amber colors from carotene and anthocyanins to show through"

I might just try the ethanol at some point. But lets try to come back to any UNIQUE AND EFFECTIVE TEKS for turning rosin to -> vape oil thanks. It might require some various special techniques. Yes winterization is one but Im hopeful we can avoid the solvent at all.... special curing, special decarb, combining terps or different runs of rosin... etc...

It probably boils down to the cartridge/pen and the viscosity of the material.

In the extraction chapter you can see that it's almost like liquid what their using.

Just remembered seeing that and thought it might help or at least spark ideas, good luck.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Those hot plate stirrers are pretty cool. I found one online for less than 60$ with temperature setting readout. Thinking of buying it.

@myvoy How slow did you decarb? Because I heard one report of someone who decarbed slow and low for 48 hours and he was able to use ZERO solvents/terps.

I hear of terps in the range from 1:20 to 1:1!
I stretched the decarb time to little over two hours....rosin stopped bubbling after about 25 minutes at @ 215-220. I lowered the temp to 200 and covered with larger beaker for another hour and half. I am still little confused about the ratio of terps because I see all kinds of recipes of ratio as you did. So, best to just experiment and see.

Whatever you do, invest in quality carts because as thick the oil was, I was able to vape most of it using CCell carts.
Also, if you go the hot plate route, get a decent temp gun. Ill update after I try with kief and 20%

Looks like your attatchments didnt come through mate.

Sounds okay I'm planning on using CCELL carts. I guess I would try to decarb slower and lower based on what I've read... Yup got the hot plate/temp gauge and temp gun. I think I need to get more terps that dont have any MCT oil cut in them tho? Then I can start to play with this... but hopefully I dont even need the terps at all...

Havent heard from you in a while @manfredo do you have any updates to report about your efforts?

No updates from me, but I am about ready to start experimenting...I have my press set up now and am getting good at cranking out rosin pretty quick. The first time I did I I thought, OMG, what have I gotten into.

Plus I have been busy trimming the past week, which means I will have some kief / bubble to play with soon.:hump:
