When growing multiple plants I have heard that if any are male they will pollenate the females causing them to have seeds and if my memory serves me correct they become hermaphrodites and produce less yield. At what age can a male pollenate a female? I would appreciate it if anyone could clarify this a bit more for me.

Females only become hermy if they are shocked into it. I don't know who told you that but if I were you I wouldnt believe another word they said.

As per your question about when they can fertilize. As soon as the pods burst open and pollen comes out of the males. So it is best to just kill the males as soon as you see balls on it.

male pollen can travel for 40 feet, even in a seperate room in same building isn't safe. So most of us don't have a seperate building for growing males. I chop 'em and dry 'em for hash oil making! hey, it leaves more room under my lights for the ladies who absolutely adore being the center(s) of attention!

...i can attest to this fact. Last summer during an outdoor grow, i cut down the males as soon as i determined that they were indeed males and put them in my compost pile --- which as it turned out far enough away from the remaining females. i got a few seeds...not a ton, but some nonetheless.
