A 40-year-old Iowa man died Thursday in a Seward, Neb., hospital after 10 pounds of marijuana was found during a traffic stop just west of the Utica Interchange.

Carl Wayne Beach of Fort Madison complained of feeling ill after being taken to the Seward County Jail. He was taken to the Seward County Hospital where he died about 1:45 a.m.

Deb Collins, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said Beach was riding in a 2001 Chrysler Sebring driven by Katrina K. Burch, 38, of Burlington, Iowa. The Sebring was westbound on Interstate 80 about 9 p.m. Wednesday when a state trooper pulled it over for failure to signal.

A search of the car led to the seizure of 10 pounds of marijuana. Burch was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

Collins said an autopsy will be conducted on Beach at the University of Creighton Medical Center.

Nebraska Law requires a grand jury be convened anytime a person dies while in police custody or in the process of apprehension.
