Truth be told governments have had more deaths involving other flues and diseases. Just it is hard to sell another approach, people do not want to hear that it is not that serious in comparison to other flu/diseases if they can possibly die from it. So governments have to be seen to have implemented preventative measures or they can easily be blamed for those deaths.
All I would do is buckle that seat belt because the more people panic the more extreme measures become, only time can tell what permanent or semi-permanent damage this will do on the world's economy.
