Hey guys,

I'm wondering how many plants i'll be able to grow in a 2x2x4 grow box with a 150w HPS? I'm using bagseed so unfortunately I do not know the strain I'm dealing with, but any sort of rough approximation would be greatly appreciated. Also, since my grow space is not that large, would anyone recommend using HPS from start to finish or should I use a CFL setup for the early stages? Cheers!

I was using an area about that size and I started numerous plants in it. You will end up with some boys so start almost double the seeds to actual plants you want. I would say with an area that size start 4 or 6 seeds and hope for 2 or 3 girls. If you really want to cram them in go ahead and start 8 or 10.

Personally right now at this moment I have 8 plants in my small area. I just pulled 2 boys, 1 was a girl 7 are unknown as of right now.

This is from my last grow. I have a DarkRoom DR80 that is 2'8"x2'8"x5'. The plants are Mexican Redhair, or whatever the politically correct kids call it these days. As you can see, three plants can get quite large. Remeber, this is only ten or so days into flowering. They got about 25% bigger by the end.

I used to do 4-6 plants in my 2x2 area. I didn't let them get very big though and I had an extra 2' of headroom. 1 plant per sq ft is a good baseline. After you figure out how much stretch, how big to veg them, etc, you may find you like having lots of small plants, or just a couple of bigger one.
Just remember with only 150watts, you don't want your plants any taller than 12" or so when finished. This is hard to do with seed. Take some clones off of your plants so you can more easily control the height of your next crop.
You can veg with either the CFLs or the HPS, it shouldn't make much of a difference. The CFLs will have less heat, so if its hot where you are, the CFLs will be better. But if heat is not an issue, go ahead and use the HPS. People will tell you it will cause excessive stretch in veg, but I have vegged with 2700k CFLs without a problem. I acutally veg with 3/4 of the 6500k and 1/4 of 2700k to get both spectrums.
