My brother lives in a bad neiborhood and theres shit spraypainted all over everything. Houses, walls, dumbsters,street signs, you name it some punk has pointed a spraycan at it. Taggers are human garbage.

thats bcuz alot of gangs use paint to designate their areas with shitty tags that have no skill or style at all. real artists dont fuck around like that. i agree tho there is alot of bullshit tagging that makes stuff look like shit, but i respect the good street art that i see.

i used to tag alot when i was a teen... it was fun, more than just vandalizing. about making a statement, an impact on things in a world where making an impact without using violence is increasingly difficult. it was also about doing something and getting away with it... these days anything that keeps guns and crack out of a kids hands shouldnt be viewed as a terrible crime with jail time, its a rediculous waste of resources for the state justice system, court costs, housing an inmate... for what? some spray paint? lets get real. kids will be kids and at some point in there kid careers, they will all get into trouble in some way or another and putting a creative kid in the system in jail is just gonna set him back in life more ways than im willing to type about. i think his punishment should be to clean the walls he painted, perhaps it will teach him the value of hard work and maybe deter him from having more run ins with the law in the future...
as i get older however i can see how vandalism is a problem... i mean im far from rich, closer to poor, and because of my tax status im in a pretty high bracket, and it sickens me enough to see the problems that exist in this country from misuse of public funds, and i dont really want my 1/3 of my income that gets donated to the gov every week to be spent on scrubbing walls a buncha kids have painted up to get there kicks. on the other hand, anyone with a basic knowledge of artistic technique can see that this kid is an artist in the making, his technique and use of color to blend styles together shows a real potential, and with a little proper training who knows? maybe he can get a succesful job as a graphic designer or something.... kids need encouragment to be something, not slapped down by society everytime they make a mistake

I say tag any and all buildings...people get over that shit...jail is not necessary "hey man, buy some paint and wash that graffiti off" <wow could the punishment be that simple? Even if you use the anology of drawing on someones car, if you cauht someone drawing on your car you wouldnt lock them in a cage for 4 and a half years? no. so why should the state. rapists get less than that.
Grafiti is art that cant be drawn on canvas, the whole idea of it is its on some public space leaving your mark as an individual, just like it was when the ancient egyptians did it. so saying 'i love grafitti but you should only do it on your own property' is like sayin i love tattoos drawn on rugs. I guess either you get it or you dont but theres no way he should be put in jail for it, at the very worst make him go round and paint over it, but 4 and a half years jail? come on..
