My first attempt at growing!

Hi all!

Feel free to post in this thread with any comments, suggestions or constructive criticisim. I am still very new to this topic and i'm sure can learn a lot from the veterans here!

I've wanted to start growing for some time, so when I found 3 seeds in some fairly decent skunk I decided now was the time.

Now i'm sure many of you are shaking your heads at the mention of bagseed and to be honest I agree with you, genetics are vital but to test the water free is always good, and if I dont get busted i'll be doing it properly next time.

So I germinated the seeds and put time in some organic compost where they grew quite happily for a week or two...

During this period they were just sat by my window, getting only a few hours of direct sunlight a day. I did some research and decided to buy a light and make a grow cupboard.

During this research I also found out about sexing plants and topping (or FIM'ing) so I fimmed them then forced the plants to flower by putting them in the cupboard overnight for a few days.

Sadly my FIM'ing was done badly, on the first and third image I didn't take enough off and on the second image I took too much, still lesson learned (Use a SCALPEL NOT YOUR FINGERNAILS and learn to aim oO)

Though on the plus side that is one deffinate female \o/ as well as one maybe and one probable male.

I decided to give it a few days to be 100% sure before pulling the male.

Now looking back on the photos I see I should have upped the pot size at this point also, another mistake and lesson learnt.

Next I went to my local hydro shop and purchased a 250w red spectrum CFL as well as some soil nutes and set it up in the cupboard.

As you can see this setup leaves a lot to be desired, loads of wasted light... more mistakes

Now that I was 100% sure one of the plants was a male I pulled it :(

I see balls, hope you guys agree! Was sad to pull the biggest plant but that's life I guess :/

Over the next week i tried various light reflecting methods using tinfoil and wire but it was more hassle than it was worth, I also upped the pot size.

Oh and the Orange Juice was some homebrew yeast c02 fail idea, soon removed!

Next up was sorting my light leak and wasted light issues, I decided the best way to do this was build a reflector for the CFL and some sort of reflective box to house the plants...

A few hours and some effort later...

Much more light hitting the top of the plants now \o/ though less is hitting the lower branches/nodes... not sure if hanging it vertically was actually that bad due to CFL lights lumen droppoff range?

But still they are happy and growing fast and the second plant is 100% female so i'm happy ;)

Now you've probably spotted the light burn, as it turns out the reflector was trapping warm air (which didnt happen before) and was too close to the plant (more mistakes), so I increased the ventillation and moved it and extra 1-2cm away. Though the damage is minor was a little disspointed that I didn't check it properly, still more lessons learnt for next time.

That's it for now, more to come hopefully with some buds at the end!

Just have to say a big thank you to my trusty helper, i'm sure he will help me smoke any produce while out for walks (I smoke.. he walks...)

I like the whole damn thing. Plants - pictures and write-up. Think you're doing a fine job Cane.
