yes, its fine to chop it off. unless theres not many fan leaves left, then ONLY cut off the yellow parts of the leaves... actually, only do that anyways, then you wont have to worry about it using up the rest of the leafs anything. just like a hair cut, except it wont grow back, its just going to force new growth into what it thinks will help it be more likely to produce, ie, everything YOU want to light on fire later on. only helpful, in that regard. hope that helps out a bit and good luck!
