My first step would be to flush solution and system with Flora Kleen, then flush with hydrogen peroxide solution (find a "How-To" for dilution and method), then refill with just the basics at half strength.

I don't know many details as to how your roots became this color (I haven't any idea of what was added to your solution (in the form of nutes or additives) in which the roots are submerged/soaking/living. ...but you can slowly add the extras and see where your error could be.

If I were to guess, I'd say that you added some sort of compost tea that mucked up your nute solution. Do you have a meter (PH, TDS/EC, PPM)? What are levels? WHat did you add the day before this began to happen? What is in your nute solution now? Are all of the roots in all buckets looking like they are rotting, or just a couple?

I use Gen. Hydro 3 part Flora Series (Micro, Grow, Bloom) and other GH additives and have some experience. Give us more info and we can help you better

My roots look like that also. I think the Gen. Hydro. nutes stain the roots. I have never had problems with my plants when the roots look like that. As long as you don't have a lot of root mass floating in the water when you change out the nutes, I personally wouldn't worry about it.

...EDIT...

I just noticed you use Liquid Karma, I use that also. That stuff really stains the roots, I think you are fine.

I use 5 gal buckets also and my roots look like that every time, they start off white, but then they change. My roots look almost black, because of the Humus acid I use. That plant you are holding looks healthy from the picture. Don't worry about color (it is coming from one of the nutrients) Dump all that crap in the first picture and go with the GH nutes at the bottom. Visit their website for information on each product and what it does, then devise your nutrient program...Root color doesn't make that juicy nug you showed in that picture, what does is proper solution, proper temps, water changes, etc. I have 4 foot flexible airstones in my 5 gal buckets and they get a water change every 7 days.l Never fails. It is a Sunday ritual to change water. I empty the buckets, clean the buckets (spray them down with a shower sprayer) add new water and new nutes, hook up my airstones again and back in to the tent we go...hope that helps! By the way, I fill my buckets with exactly 3 gals of water. I started off with Technaflora nutes. They make a starter kit and thought I would give it a try a year or so ago and I LOVE the product. Never had problems with my plants in any of my grows because of NUTRIENTS.

Also, I would pull that feeder tube out of the hydroton and the net pot. No need for it as long as the roots are in the water getting their nutes and TONS of air bubbles in those buckets. Again, I have 3 or even in some buckets, 4 foot flexible airstones to make the water almost roll.

i doubt you'll get those pretty white roots doing a dwc grow. i know i never have. mine are usually brown like yours...........worse when i use molasses. i've gone down on the stregth of my nutrient solution, so now mine are as light as they have ever been, but they are still brown. i think those white roots come from some kind of aeroponics or misting system.

If you have used a mixture of those nutes then that will turn them colors. Everyone freaks out about it but look at the color of the nutes. When a kid spills kool aid on white paper what color does that white paper turn? Kool aid color. Same for roots. Just as long as the smell is nute, or earthy, then your good. If the smell makes you wanna puke then you got rot.

you said ai stone in the net pot correct? if you use only 3 gals of water how does the water bubble and get air to the roots? im picturing a half filled bucket with the airstones not touching water?????

Jerkin,

There is also a submersible pump in my tub, not buckets (those get airstones later also), that is pumping water up the bottom of my rockwool and hydroton. This way, my rockwool stays wet. Just like any root, before it ever dies, it seeks out water first. So in this case, with the pump pushing water through those tubes, the roots grow down in search of the water source and then through the netcup. When I am in buckets, by then my roots are touching that 3 gallons of water and that water is bubbling and moving with nutes in it that the plant is eating. In my 5 gal buckets, I keep 3 gallons of water in there all the time.
