NERKY Be Savin Them Stones

The one I love and I strive toward land ownership. The thought consumes us. We don't have it yet, but soon. Soon is a relative term;-) so we're trying to get good tree stock going now. We're aware of the difficulties with fruit tree seed (some cant repro from seed, none will be the same as parents, etc.), but I've been saving the stones and pits from anything OG and delicious all spring/summer. Two days back I split the stones of 50 some odd plum, white/yellow peach, nectarine, cherry, apricot, pluot and mango. While the mango is a pipe dream for my climate (exception being some Sepp Holzer level plant orientation/terroir), I have recently split and started germing all the rest. I didn't stratify in sand, but I did follow different techniques with each, ranging from allowing a little rot/fermentation to form on the stone 1-3 mo to scrubbing clean/drying/refrigerating for 1-3 mo/soaking in skim milk 1 hour before splitting stone (I've started using skim experimentally as a mildecide/fungicide and amino acid provider). They are now all in sealed ziploc and stratified in damp paper towel. Our plan is to overwinter the smaller species indoors and the rest in an outdoor greenhouse that will be covered, lit and heated (ish). I plan to keep storing and germing tree seed for the next year or two. I think this will really be a challenge for many reasons, but hell or highwater I will have fruit trees ready to plant the day I buy land. Thanks for listening.
