net pots, size

I am building a hydro system and am trying to figure out what a good size net pot to use. Would a 3 inch diameter net pot be big enough to grow a plant from Veg to Flower? Would I go with a bigger diameter or smaller? I plan to use Hydroton in the pots but want to make sure the roots have enough room to grow and the plant to thrive.

When I first started, I used 5" net pots in a DWC tub. I modified my system into an aero system and decided to go with 3" pots. There has never been a problem with the 3" pots as the roots grow large and become the base and the stability of the plant.
