You've got to find silver linings where you can.
Seems to me the only reason to steal power would be to cover up a large operation.

How many kilowatts of power does it take to get the attention of the authorities?
I dunno, but my usage is the highest on our block, dte is sure to inform me monthly. I dont think authorities are alerted
if bills are paid. with legal grows everywhere that dog dont bark much anymore I think.

I live in a legal state and before it was officially legal it was still unofficially legal to a certain extent.
The police here could look at your power consumption, once they got you in their cross hairs, to help build a case and get a warrant.
Stealing some power would be advantageous in such a circumstance.

Many years ago, I knew someone who knew a low level mafia type. This could have been a friend of a friend. They had been somehow stealing power from the light pole by their house. I think eventually someone ratted them out.

I think if people really want to reduce energy consumption for growing - use QBs, solar panels, fenced backyard with clear polycarbonate green house room or shed. Stealing power is too dangerous.

I'd rather pay for the power I use, because stealing is bad karma and would be one more thing to worry about. :eyesmoke:
The last place I rented in town, had a smart meter and I never once saw the meter reader. I think they read it back at the office.
You'll still see the gas meter reader drive up and down the road, around town with their little antenna poking out the cab, remotely reading meters, on the fly.
The older smart meters allowed a car to drive by and capture the data. The new ones probably have wi fi.

Those are some scary diy videos right there. One of the guys had a meltdown on his workbench.

I can easily imagine a homer simpson build taking out someones house......
The So Calif guy who appears to be of Mexican-American ancestry (Jehu Garcia) knows his sh*t. He drives a Range Rover and Tesla plus has a mint old VW van. I think he owns some sort of company. He is no dummy.

In another video, his buddy Eric took a old BMW 3 series, raided dumpsters and such. Built an EV car that kicked Tesla ass in range with close to 400 miles on a charge versus 315 for a top of the line Tesla.
