noob topping question

When topping a plant, how important is it to have nodes under?
I'm gunna attempt the mainline technique but want to make sure im not messing up.

Ex: people saying top after 6th node for 4 main Colas

My thought is it doesn't matter as long as your topping the main stalk, and that's how you get two g

after the 5 or 6 node you can cut the top

Yes, you need a node(s) below where you top. When you top, the main stalk will stop growing and the branches on the nodes below become your growth points. If you can get past the same question asked over and over again, the thread above has all the info you need.

Actually you just answered my confusion.. I thought when you topped you took off the top, and the plant would sprout two more. Now i see that it just makes the lowers its main.. Good shit.

I go along with mypetskunk, there should be at least one set of nodes below the cut.
