Nevada District 36 Assemblyman Ed Goedhart, R-Amargosa Valley, turned in a bill draft request providing improved access to medical marijuana, by the Feb. 14 deadline for individual legislators to submit bills.

State Sen. Mike McGinness, R-Fallon, introduced bill draft requests to set up a joint fund for smaller counties to pool money to help ensure financial stability. McGinness also introduced a bill requesting an easement in permitting requirements for small mining operations.

Goedhart emphasized his bill wouldn’t make marijuana legal for everyone, but would improve on legislation already approved by the voters.

Goedhart said 54 percent of the voters approved a ballot question allowing medical marijuana in the 1999 election, another 65 percent approved it in 2001, enacting it into law. Patients would have to be diagnosed with certain conditions like lymphoma or chemotherapy.

But Goedhart added, “They never provided a means of access for those people who need medical marijuana. This bill will provide a safe, legal access to those folks that were given their right to legal marijuana.”
