While Abraham Lincoln was a war mongering segregationist who routinely shit on the Constitution, his act of "freeing the slaves" was more of a war tactic than a benevolent thing on his part.
Of course nobody should have ever been enslaved in the first place. Which makes for even more irony since Lincoln essentially waged war on people for attempting to secede, not because they had slaves, but because they were daring to try to leave the Union. Of course if you can't leave a Union...you are enslaved.

While slavery had been a major issue that led to the war, Lincoln's only mission at the start of the war was to keep the Union together. The Proclamation made freeing the slaves an explicit goal of the Union war effort, and was a step toward abolishing slavery and conferring full citizenship upon ex-slaves.

My point was when former slaves were freed from their individual masters, that was a good thing.
When they were conferred "citizenship" they became enslaved again in a manner of speaking.

You mean where Reagan made a deal with democrats and Ted Kennedy said:
Ted Kennedy on the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli Bill: “This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this.”
I guess he meant EXACTLY like IRCA which wasn't an executive order.
