On a quest to find potency(need help)

Okay so for starters I'm still new at this with only a hand full of harvests under my belt.

With that being said, I can't tell you how many seedlings I've had die from damping off before changing my starting medium. My average germination rate was like 1 survivor for every 9 dead. horrible. Well after getting some advice from a fellow Riu member, I decided to switch to miracle grows seed starting mix. Now I'm getting 90-100% success! Thanks to the guy who made that suggestion, you increased my chances of being successful, tenfold.

Now that I'm able to germinate without it turning into a killing spree, I'm onto my next issue, potency.

so out of about 20 or so seeds I've only found 3-4 that I would want to make staples. The rest of them turned out to be some nice looking SWAG! With that being said I should note that all the seeds were purchased thru a reputable seed bank. I can't image that I'm screwing them up so bad that I'm taking cup winning strains and turning them into swag. If anything I'd say that the different phenotypes are to blame for these issues.

Its a loose perpetual grow(I don't have a detailed plan, I just replace harvested plants with new ones that I have been vegging). growing in coco coir and perlite mix after the seeds germ. Their indoors, under 400w mh and 600w hps.

So I currently have about 20 seeds or so,that I haven't germinated yet. I'm trying to get some more potent plants to clone, Basicly I'm just trying to find new genes (phenotypes) worth growing.

So here's my question with all that in mind, does it make sense to take these 20 seeds germinate, veg for a very brief period, just long enough to take clones from each plant, that way I can preserve that individual plant forever. It doesn't matter what they yeild I just can't afford to be paying almost 500$ a month for electricity for 3 months, putting in so much hard work just to find out that, the plant I just wasted $1500 worth of electricity growing is good enough to GIVE AWAY to those bums who call them selves my friends. Is this what I should've been doing from the start? Instead of worrying about yeilds and everything else, just concentrate on finding the best phenotype out of the seeds I have. then once I know the potency is there, then I can worry about getting more yield per plant, training and all the other factors, since potency is so dependent on the genetics, and really little can be done to turn swag into grade A nuggage.!

Where are you getting your seeds? If you want good potency, you need good genetics. Go online to a reputable seedbank! Its far easier than just trying to find one good pheno of bag seed. And $500 a month? That's pretty insane. A 600 watt and fans is only costing me $50-100 a month currently

I might be exaggerating 3-4 out of 20, it just seems like so many just aren't potent. They look good, but their not potent.

What are you feeding these plants? In coco u need a full hydro nute schedule. With 1000w of HID lighting u should be producing top shelf nugs even if you are making big mistakes.
