Pineapple Express: Smoke Report

I was pretty sure Pineapple Express was going to be a strain I really liked. You heard about it all over, they even named a movie after it.

My good friend, told me just from the reviews he read, that I should forget about Pineappple Express. But I didn't want to listen, as I had a few puffs of something once that someone told me was Pineapple Express, and it seemed like fair weed to me at the time.

But of course that's just the problem, someone tells you this, someone tells you that. And you really don't know for sure what you have until you grow it out and smoke it.

The smell was nice, the buds look pretty, they resined well, yeild was good, but the buzz although not exceptionally potent was alright. But the flavor on this Pineapple Express I grew out, is/was horrible.

Another variable you'll find in bred cannabis, is inconsistency. You might find something that is choice, but bad stuff keeps popping up too.

And I'll tell you what, I don't see that (wild type variation) in my breeding, we look at the Thunderstuck clone (which I feel is the best! held elite clone around)
And I mention it (the TS clone) being the best, because my of my job as a cannabis magnet. I meet all sorts of people, that get to try the clone, over and over again.

And I keep hearing the same thing over and over again, after I smoke Vonblown's Wonderbud, "I can't get high off anything else". Sounds like a bold statement I know. But none the less, true, and it is something that I have experienced myself for many years.

I've heard the same thing but not from only one of my strains>anything I grow gets around immediately after a wk. cure

I like to have 5-20 plants of a strain to pick through and the Pineapple 5pack I got had all good pheno. but one that tasted like menthol+rest tasted like crazy tropical fruit/citrus with a mostly head high(2hr.)
I enjoy having a few different types of buds and the Pineapple is my all day buds (mine gets 15+gram Tops)

I recently grew out pineapple express, under my LED/fluroscent grow.

The over all quality/potency of the pot I would say is somewhere around upper mids.

It has decent flowering time and resin.

I'd say it's biggest draw back was flavor.

And while my fluro/LED lighting system allows me to achieve unparalleled quality, potency and flavor.
Pineapple express fell totally flat on taste. Not only was the flavor wierd and undesireable. It actually left a shit taste in my mouth. That lasted for almost 2 freaking hours. (Never encountered anything like this before)

So, because of this flavor problem, I'd have to give this strain a zero more or less. And I don't recommend growing it.

(For reference this was a feminized Pineapple Express seed from G13 Labs)
I do believe the error was in flush. The hawaiian sativa can be bitter if not leached properly. Every seed I've popped from G13 Labs PE has been frosty and smooth ! Not a couch lock strain .. more mood enhancing .. Happy feelings. Great day time formula and does well in tincture, edibles, etc. Here's how I do it ..

Smell was like a fruity rose ... frost is off the charts .. dunno bought yeild .. but it's a Doozie ! 3-5 zipps ea .. 5 wk veg .. 9 wk flwr (10 day flush) !

Oh .. an NO LED or Fluro stuff .. 600 hid hps baby ! That's how you up ur game ... :weed:

You know, Marc Emery use to say it was rare for any weed to retain it's flavor, till the very end of of a joint.

That's probably why, he was so impressed with the Wonderbud I sent him. I sent Emery actual bud to smoke. Rather then, sending him seeds, and having them grown out. However I did send him a bunch of wonderbud seeds also. Some of those Emery took to the Nimbin cup. And had a grower in Australia grow out the Wonderbud and a number of other strains Emery thought was the best from his seed catalog.

The original name for Wonderbud was, (Vic's Vapor Rub x Reddenbacher 413)

Now, neither the Vic's or the Reddenbacher was a real strain by itself. It was just made up names, that Bill Wonder liked. Because Wonderbud tasted and smelled of a fruit, menthol, eucolyptis and greasy turpintine. And the other part, Orville Reddenbacher was Bill Wonder's favorite popcorn breeder.

However about a month or so later, after I told Emery the name, and sent him the seeds. Bill Changed his mind and wanted to call it "Wonderbud"

Here's a screen shot, of the double page spread in Emery's defunct Cannabis Culture magazine. The Wonderbud, taking 3rd place. And receiving special mention for it's extreme flavor. You can see my old name by the Vick's image and text "tim haight"b96.PNG

Bill Wonder, was always breeding for taste. He was one of the people that was really receptive to turpins giving him a buzz.

Me, I was always more of a medical user. Of course I like things to taste good like anybody. I mean nobody likes a bad taste in their mouth.

If you check my other thread review of Bhutanese Thumphui. You will see, I think the flavor of the Bhutanese tastes similar to ditch weed. It's not as bad a flavor as the Pineapple express female I grew. But, it does in fact taste very similar to ditchweed.

Taste is a big issue for a lot of people. I tried some 400 dollar an ounce local weed. It was trimmed nice, rock hard, crystal nugs, looked great in the bag. And it actually gave you a fairly good buzz. It's big draw back is it's flavor, it tasted like ditch too.

And the odd thing, the person that suggested it to me. Admited it tasted like ditch when we smoked it. They commented, when they tried a bowl the day before, it seemed to taste better. But a side by side comparison with the thunderstruck clone showed it didn't.

One more comment about the Bhutanese, while it's flavor was simlar to ditch, and so was the 400 dollar an ounce local weed. However the Bhutanese produced a much better hash product then the local fare I sampled.

The local weed, was one of the very few bud products I've seen. That was actually worse in hash form then bud form. The flavor actually worsened when I made some sift from the local weed, the Bhutanese was better as hash...

But now back to what I was saying about Bill's version of Wonderbud. Now, even though Bill's Wonderbud, was a taste monster. And obviously fairly popular with some folks.

I didn't like it, I liked my version better.

I was growing with my fluroscent set up at the time, Bill was using a combination of HM and HPS 1000 watt lighting for flowering. When we decided to "hybridize"

I'll comment, that I not only liked my version better then Bill's, I liked the 3rd breeders version better also. Although not as well as my own.

Hybrdizing for my end brought a number of different things.

Like the New Hawaiians:

I always like to test breeding or cloning subjects under 3 different lighting types to identify them fully.

These lighting regimes are as follows:

1. MH and HPS
2. Fluro and LED
3. Natural light (outside)

As a individual female, can be prominent, in any one or all 3 catagories.

One of the reasons you see variance in grow reports, other then bad conditions etc. Is grower unfamiliarity with these type of variables, and not properly identifying test subjects.

Yeah I suppose Soul caught everyone's attention with Cindy 99. Bill even had a pair of shoes made that said Cindy 99 on them, lol.

I met Mr. Soul on the internet, when he was at Cannabis.com one day. And I happened to start discussing breeding with him. And long story short, we made a trade. Some Wonderbud of Bill's for some of the unreleased Grimm genetics.

Now my opinon of Cinderella, the most inbred unreleased version, the Soul insisted was the best?

Well, I didn't like it. First off it's not a medical strain. I found it irritating to smoke, both on my lungs and mental well being.

Cindy smelled like sweet pineapple suntan lotion to me. Extremely resinous, I use to look at pics of Cindy on the net before I saw her grown myself. And the intense crystalization, often the pictures I saw look white. I had to think is that from all the crystals or what?

And I would say, "Yeah it is from heavy amount of crystals on the bud". So, it was definetly a match for Bill's Wonderbud. As it was one of the stinkiest resinous things I had ever seen. I'd say over all on taste, Wonderbud had Cindy beat. But Cindy came in a close second I would say.

So Bill's growing Cinderella, resulted in things like Wonderjack, and Superjack. And of course the Wonder Thunderstruck clone, which seems to have no equal so far.

Here's a shot of Wonderjack, I think Highgrade grew this one out. Wonderjack was a hybrid of the Grimm Cindy x Aurua Borealis crossed with Wonderbud. The yield on this one wasn't great, but intense flavor, and potent unique high made it a favorite of mine.

So, much so, I went to great links delving into a hermie line to retrieve what I now posess. And call, my "Wonderjacks cutting" That's Wonderjacks with an S on the end. That is to distinguish it from the original line. Because this is something a bit different... ;)

Cure brings out the flavors...Pineapple Express has a few pheno.
There is a very tasty and potent one, I know for a fact because I grow + smoke it.
20 days curing after a good slow dry should do fine!

I had gotten a larger yielding pheno. that didn't taste great, but still potent head buzz.
The one that tasted like pure Tropical Fruit Salad and slightly stronger head high, that was the keeper for me.

The keepers smelled very strong of Sweet Mango during late flowering (none of the rotten fruit smell)
I got different results from each pheno. and 2 were better + hard to pick the keeper of those 2.
You will find small differences in even identical looking s33d plants after smoking them a few generations.

One of my best grows to this day was pineapple express. The smell, taste, and high were outstanding. I still have friends asking about it 2 years later. Actually I have 2 going right now. should be ready by summer. What a great weed to have for the warm months ahead. I just hope it comes out like the previous grow or better. actually I didnt train my plants at the time i grew it and yielded 2.75 oz's under a 250hps grown next to a horrible ghs white rhino. So I figure If I top and train 2 with a 5 week veg I should get a nice stash. All my stuff is for personal use. Of course i share with a few friends and family, but absolutely not for sale.
