Plant issues

How can you tell the difference between nute burn vs light/heat burn vs bad bug spray? I had to hit my plants with some organic pesticide and they've seem to have gone to shit since. I tried watering them with a dose of water +10/10/10 at the recommended serving level, but they got worse.

All of the leaves are curling slightly (some worse than others), light yellow/white spots speckled on the leaves, and I had to clip a leaf that was showing signs of necrosis (curled wicked bad and had dark spots on it, only leaf to do that so far). Has been 3 days since last watered with Nutes, and temp stays at 65-75 degrees. Humidity 50-80%. The soil's pretty moist so I'm waiting till tonight or tomorrow to try and flush some nutes out, if that's the problem.

The speckles on the leaves have been there for about 5 days, and since they showed up haven't gotten any worse. It seemed like a Thrip issue so I used some "organic" spray on them, and that's when the curling started.

I had two 160 watt LED's hanging about 2.5 feet above my plants, I tried moving them up to 3.5-4 feet in case the curling was a coincidence and the lights were too close.

I'll post some pictures, but I'd rather not if I don't have to :P

hey Nethrick...from what i've read, the difference in light burn vs nute burn is the discoloration of the leaves...nute burn will tend to be more yellow while a heat burn will tend to be more brown?...someone correct me if i'm wrong...if what i've read is right though, the brown spots you were talking about may have just been burn from your lights? could you post pictures? i'm currently one month into veg. and i noticed the curling of my leaves you mentioned...they aren't curling down, though...they are curling up and together, almost like a taco shell..is this normal? i'm kind of worried because it's my prized plant...VANILLA KUSH..help?

These pictures are all current, any ideas? You can see my little CO2 generator goin' at the bottom.

This is a picture of the leaf from 2 days ago, before it started looking really bad.

I considered the possibility that even though I have a fan in my grow room (about 4x4 floor space, no windows, 1 door) that maybe because there isn't any ventilation that it could be messing with the plant as well. I have the CO2 pumping in there obviously, and a strong 24" fan circulating. But I have no way of telling if this is good enough for them. Any thoughts?

sounds like we have an almost identical set up...i'm working with a homemade hydro system consisting of sprayers, airstone, and 2 spots for net pots in a 18 gallon reservoir...as mentioned, my prized plant is the vanilla kush and the other strain is sharksbreath...im also working in a closet, probably about 6x4 floor, no windows, and 1 door...

as for the burns...i'm not sure i'd be TOO concerned with them..yes, they aren't attractive and yes, it is a signal that the plant is giving off to say SOMETHING IS WRONG...BUT, with that being said, as long as you have healthy, green growth throughout the majority of the plant, I would say you'll be OK...you moved the lights up, right?...i would wait another day and see if that has an effect on their appearance...if not, you could always flush like you said to see if nutes are the problem...check out this link to another forum that has pictures and descriptions of different nutrient deficiencies...

good luck, let me know what you decide to do...

OH...also, it's a bit hard to tell...but are the spots, discolorations, etc. of leaves happening at the canopy or throughout the entire plant? the one picture makes it look like the leaves below the canopy are suffering from the same thing, as well...if you have uniform problems throughout the entire plant, I would advise you flush asap because that would definitely decrease the chance that it was heat burn from your light since that tends to happen primarily at the top of the canopy, where leaves are directly exposed...i've experienced both nute and heat burn before and in my experience, they can be treated for with a little extra monitoring and maintenance...the most important thing you can do is to keep an eye on them and see if the conditions are getting worse, ESPECIALLY if you have moved the light away...if conditions continue to worsen, AFTER the light was moved, thats a dead give away that you need to change something else ASAP...just remember, anyone can give you information, but only YOU know the growing conditions that you're working with...i suggest you toy around with your set up...when i noticed my leaves curling I gave them a light watering, moved the light away, changed the position of my fan, etc etc...anything you could think of, i did...i encourage you to do the same and see what works for you...good luck!!!!

here are some pictures of my current girls to give you an idea of my burn situation...

sorry for the bad quality, ha but i took them with my mac book camera and the light was makin my comp screen go crazy haha but anyway, you get the point...

the picture that you can actually see the inner branches/nodes of is the sharksbreath...idk if you can tell, but the sides of the leaves are more brownish than yellow and the newer sets of leaves are a lighter, brighter green..is this bad?...i woke up this morning to more small burns on the canopy (probably from the new 600W light i just put in)...that picture was JUST taken...i had actually considered just letting it grow and if it died, oh well, i would still have the V.kush...BUT, i topped it about 2-3 hours ago, and since, it is looking very promising...i've had problems with the sharksbreath from the beginning...nute burned her BAD when she was in her earlier stages, but every time i count her out, she is determined to prove me wrong...

the other picture is obviously the vanilla...you can see the slight burns and where the leaves have actually kind of folded over in that taco shell form i mentioned earlier...is this bad? i'm assuming it isn't GOOD ha..but can anyone help? the stem got thick fast...it's probably about 1/2 inch thick, but i'm worried about BOTH plants lack of vertical growth...i know everyone wants their plants to be small and bushy with outward growth, but i have not topped, not trained..NOTHING and the vanilla just refuses to grow upwards...the roots that poke through the rockwool look healthy, but it's as if they are reluctant to push through the bottom of the pot and down towards the reservoir...is there anything i can do to encourage this along? or is this plant just going to surprise me and blow up in a few weeks?

go to the plant problem forum and start reading, and looking at the pics. you'd be surprised how quickly you'll be able to pick it up. most problems are pretty basic, and easy to recognize.

The images on that thread are AWESOME. Even my grow bible doesn't show pictures that clear.
