Please help me

My friend is planning on a 4FT X 32 FT grow, wondering if MH for veg and HPS for flower is still the best?
For a 4FT wide by 32FT long area, would you rock 600’s or 1000 watters? How many lights how many plants? Thanks!

You are going to get a million options here I personally am a Quantum Board fan any good QB or COB will keep your heat low and lower your power consumption. I used to use LEC (Ceramic Metal Halide and HPS before) but I like these better If you are stuck on the HID lights I would go about 50 watts per sq foot and 35 per sq foot for LED. regardless to say stay away from Amazon crap lights. I am running about the same amount of area as you and I have about 5000 watts of QBs going right now. If I were to go with the HIDs I would go with 600 watt units for a more even spread and to avoid bleaching in areas (or even 315 watts for LECs). Right now there are some good deals on lights so it is a good time to buy.. As for plants it really depends on your style SCROG growers like to pack them in to fill every bit of space. I like to space them out with bigger plant I grow in 3 to 5 gallon pots and usually have about 60 to 70 going.

There are many variables here. The guy above is kinda off too.

First off, what height are the plants to be at finish? This is where you figure if it's to be LED boards or HID.

HID will run a taller plant
LED can make a very dense canopy that runs shorter plants. It's all about penetration for plants that are tall and LED doesn't penetrate like any HID DE, or even a single end HID.

HID DE should be run in a TALL room for keeping plants cool, and the area should be mini split cooled. Same for the regular HID - Not to mention they should be in cooling hoods that are high quality.
LED does need cooling for the area also! Same thing, mini split.

Price is another factor.
HID is relatively cheap to buy up front but, LED costs less to run and save's lotsa coin down the road..

HID 1000 watts period! NO LESS per fixture.

LED- HLG boards or the equal here. HLG units about 900 per delivered
HIGH Quality equivalent's are running about 500 delivered.
Check Ebay for these.

The guy I get mine from - Has been swamped since I gave his Ebay store out.. You gotta ask....

HID 1k's in that space - 5 or 6, with 6 pushing it..

HLG 550 V2's - 6 to 7....depends on if the row is done continuous..

Thanks guys. I’m somewhat skeptical about LED...? Someone told someone I know that some people are using Metal Halide for flower now?? Was he misinformed or is this a new technique?
My friend has two 1000W Mh and HPS bulbs, how many can he safely run without law enforcement knocking or fuses getting blown?

No need to be skeptical about LED as long as you get good ones. Can't say about blowing fuses, we know nothing about your breaker panel. As for law enforcement, again, can't say. Don't know where you are, what your laws are etc. Some people do run MH for flower but it is not the optimal spectrum so won't produce the best results.

Like I said you will get a million different opinions and styles here. Find what works for you. I love my HLG boards (BTW I build my own lights and pay no where near $900 each) Stay away from Ebay sellers too most are knockoffs. Also with getting locked up. It happens, been there done that, The smell has gotten me busted over power consumption also cheap ballasts emit rf signals and good cops know how to look for them. What you should do is get some good seed and a couple of good different lamps and try a few different styles (the vertical guys like tystick always amaze me) and see what one fits you best. Then invest. I have thrown out thousands of dollars of lights over the years as I changed my ways but they work best for me. And I am happy to say I regularly break 1.75 grams per watt on my grows. Good luck.

Appreciate the replies. Not new to growing, asking if any new tek has came out since my friend last grew *indoor* about 8 years ago... it was always MH veg, HPS flower; but have recently heard of a possible new tek involving MH for the last few weeks of flower? Also, wondering if any new technology came out that made LED surpass MH/HPS or if MH/HPS is still the king?
As far as lights, my friend has never grown in a 4x32 space. Wondering if that space is too thin to cram in 1000w’ers? His plan was two 1000 W’ers or three 600 W’ers with 27 plants.

If yer new to growing, that's a big space to F up

Mh is for veg
Hps for flower

White light LED are the best option out there, but, HPS will work just fine too

Good luck
I used led many years ago... never got the buds to swell up nice and sexy like HPS, they always ended up airy. Could you link an example to the product you’re speaking of please?

A 1000W single end HID is only good for about a 5'x5' space in veg and about a 4'x4' space in flower. For a 32' long run, your looking at about ( 8 ) 1KW lights for a 4'x32' space.
Not all LED's are created equal. For this reason and your perceived level of experience in LED's, I'd recommend just running switchable digital 1K ballasts and get you some 1000W MH bulbs and some 1000W HPS bulbs so you can switch out as you see fit over the duration of the grow(s).
LED and HID both bring their own qualities to the table, its on you to figure out what qualities will best suit your growing needs.

If your asking basic questions I would say your lacking the experience to pull off a grow this big, I would like to see you prove me wrong. You will need at least 9 600w lights for that area imo, 3 will do 4/5ths of fuck all. I ran 6 600w in a 10x10 grow and thought it could use more.
I would personally run HID 750w D/E lights, I’ve had much better growers then me recommend them and seeing good results
Btw get your mate to join so we can speak to the grower

4FTx32FT is the total area but I suppose perhaps closer to 3FTx25FT once you factor in the foot SWIM will need to walk, and the small veg chamber using the remaining 5-7FT.
SWIM will look into all lights mentioned!!

Um, set them on 6 ft centering. Your overlapping your lighting with 1K's. So, you can run continuous on that line - 6 lights - 7 max and your over doing it at 7 a bit too. Not that it hurts at all though!

I've run that pattern for years and years. Now doing it with my HYGROW LED's - shorter plants and an extra unit on each row.

Brings me to this -

Stay away from Ebay sellers too most are knockoffs.
I ran side by sides for 2 whole runs (bloom room only) Ran A TRUE HLG 550 V2 - 1K HID single end in 20% more reflective hoods - HYGROW direct copies of the HLG but with the H diodes, not the B's.
I got the best results from the HYGROW LED's.
The rest of the HID was removed and I had the guy build me 7 more of his HLG "copies".

BTW what you built is a "Knockoff", technically...
Waiting to get the power supplies from the maker is a big issue right now. AND at 62. I didn't want to learn to build my own. I can afford someone who already knows what their doing, do it for me...
MY choice,
I know....NOTHING wrong with building your own either!

Here, open these up and the red board is the "TRUE" HLG.
The silver boards are the HYGROW's
Now count the # of diodes on each.... I feel that,, is why the Hygrow's outdid the HLG's
