40% of electricity consumption from a typical household is from appliances that are plugged in but not turned on. I think this is what he was citing when he recommended unplugging things. It does make a noticable difference.

4000w in a four bedroom is fine. I re-route my exhaust during these winter times and I don't have to use my heater. It's hooked up to a Phat filter so there is zero smell in the house

As far as electricity goes... my buddy has a recording studio set up in his basement. All that gear consumes a lot of electricity. My grandfather used to have a wood shop set up in his basement. This also used a fair amount of juice. There are lots of plausible explanations for a 4kW additional power usage.

If you want to avoid detection... manage the smell and tell as few people as possible.
