Post Mortem

Alright so after what can only be described as a disaster of a first attempt i have decided to call it quits with my first grow attempt. It served as a huge learning curve but i still need to work out exactly what i did wrong.
so here are the details of my grow space and my attempted grow. Keep in mind it is in a broom closet and i only want to grow 1 or 2 plants in there in the end.

Grow space.

Dimensions:
38cm wide
49cm deep
112cm height

Additions:
Emergency blanket used on sides and bottom for reflection.
Extractor fan duct just above light to remove heat.
Small fan near the ground for air flow over plants.

Lights:
150 watt HPS (always kept at least 25cm away from top of the plants)
Next grow thinking of starting with 2 42 watt CFLs and only adding the HPS later on when plants are bigger.

Soil:
Initially before transplant just organic potting soil made from wood bark.( Not good i know but i hadn't done enough research before starting)
After transplant 50 percent compost, 20 percent perlite, 30 percent same potting soil from before.( Also not the best i know)

Nutrients:
Only started using cause the plants leaves were going greeny yellow and i thought that there wasn't enough nitrogen.
Initially Nitrosol by Greena gardens but stopped using after nutrient burn and nitrogen toxicity started up.
Plants stayed greeny yellow and started to curl up and a bit of necropsy.
After that didn't work I thought maybe there was a phosphorus deficiency so I used cacti and succulents plant food by Pokon. Used twice (two days in a row) then stopped.
Large difference in the color of the leaves was seen within 4 days the new growth was dark green.
However 2 days after those 4 nutrient burn got worse and so normal water was used for the next 2 weeks.
Plants quickly changed back to a greeny yellow and looked sickly.
Tried using some gwano pellets from pro ten but that didn't help at all.

OK and here comes the big thing. I do not know any of the PHs of the nutes or the water i was giving the plants as I don't have a ph meter i will be getting one before the next grow.

The strange thing is that about 3 weeks into the grow I had to move some of the plants out side as there wasn't enough space inside for them anymore. I gave them pretty much the same notes and water but the plants that were moved outside are healthy and look good(still small though).

Plants:
Random bag seed.
All hybrids with sativa dominance.

Plants stayed small with little to no space between nodes and didn't stretch out side ways at all. (will upload photos in next post)

So I know I have no experience growing and that i messed up a lot but i need help figuring out what not to repeat and what to do with my next attempt.

Keep in mind i am in South Africa and good bottled nutes and good soil ready to use is hard to find.

those dont look like nute burn. looks like over watering, and perhaps a bad ph, hurting uptake, which hurt mag uptake as well, as they look a little purple/red to me at the leafs. but thats my opinion.

to me they look hungry
over watered
and the pot size is way to big
that plant should be in a 6" pot

all the tops are relatively healthy and the bottoms super pale
if your ph was off significantly Id think youd see issues in the top growth,
was the original bark from a bag and already ph adjusted or did it require the addition of lime and a cooking period?

I wouldn't chuck them just yet I believe they will recover quickly, under fed plants recover quickly

they do look possibly over water which can also make them look N def

how long ago did you re-pot? the compost you added should give them a good boost on its own so i wouldn't go crazy adding fertilizer to quickly

what do you have available in the way of fertilizer
is it liquid or powder

hopefully its not time released unless its organic

what are the npk% numbers listed

The pots are 2.5L pots.
Yeah the bark was from a bag and already PH adjusted.

The NPK for the cacti Nutes is 4:8:8 if i remember correctly and the gwano is 3:4:4.
I don't know about the Nitrosol but i know it is 8 for N

I don't know enough about your ferts to guide you

I don't know if theyr organic or time release or what
and I don't know what nitrolsol is

sorry im not much help here

Im a relative rookie so cant really offer much advice, except - why why why do people invest a lot of time, money and effort on a grow and then risk the whole damned thing by using bagseed!! I just dont get it, you can get 5 decent feminised seeds from Nirvana for €35, i just bought 3 Humbolt autos for €24. If you can afford a HPS lamp im sure you could afford a few decent seeds! Why take the risk of ending up with males or messed up genetics?

This is the most N deficient plant(still alive) ive seen in many years and thats why its so stunted for its age.
Next time use good coco for the medium and use veg hydro nutes from the start, first half strength then full.

Looks underfed and overwatered. Maybe overheated?

Many dont want to blow money on seeds when they are inexperienced and would rather hone there tenique on free/cheep bag seed. Btw theres nothing wro g with bag seed except you dont know the strane. Its only bad weed because of the way in witch its grown. In a huge field probably with pestisides. Harvested early dried and packed into blocks un cured. I run a hydro store and see all kinds of plants good and bad/sick. I have seen many a dank nug come from bag seed
