Unless you plan on vegging your plants for the next 2 years I would think a 5 gal would be more than enough. Some prefer square containers, I prefer 4 gal. and as for soil and fert goes. It depends on who you ask. Foxfarm has a hell of a reputation for soil and ferts. If you go Fox farm, I would go through a source like thebigtomato.com. They are cheaper than even amazon.com. If your pinching pennies like the rest of America (World) I would reccomend building your own soil... Here's a recipe that cannot fail. 30% worm castings (sold at wal mart 5$), 30% vermiculite, 20% perlite, and 20% peat moss... All easily obtainable and very affordable. I've even grown in straight up worm caastings before... And it worked! But the above recipe is better fo sho! The fun part is the nutes/ferts. It is so easy to get sucked in to the expensive game of this is better blah, blah, and there are very good nutes out there. But F*%^K spending the fortune, like I have done many times, and get on Ebay search out Blue Mountain Organics and pick up the whole Kit and Kaboodle. If you have questions, call them, or email them. The prices will astound you, and their quality is out of this world!!!! I will never go back to fancy name, fancy label ferta again. Just take a look, ask questions, and those Ozark Hill billy's will treat you right!!!! My pics should tell u the above combination works...
