Power Company Demanding Inspection For High Usage

One of the sadder days in recent memory. Honestly if I was a bachelor I'd prob feel/have acted differently but can't do the thought of risking someone elses freedom. Just a lot of work time and money involved. One thing to say, it could be worse!
I'm so sorry to hear this. Is not just the income, it's a livelihood, a passion. As they say; one door closes, another opens. The trick is finding the damned thing!

What you've done too is bought yourself some time to now sit back and think it all through for awhile. You probably made the best decision you could have made. It does suck to have to cave to those bastards though I'm sure.

Almost all new conduit/wire has a manufactured date on it, if an inspector is in there and wants to bust your balls they'll check for it, and if it's newer than when your final inspection was, you could possibly have to pay fines and open a demolition permit, etc. Might get lucky and just have to have a licensed/legit electrician look through it all and approve of it being up to code, but it sounds like you got some real ball busters on your tail. Sorry to hear theyre giving you such a hard time man, I think you did the right thing though by closing up shop for now.

So update, went to power company today because they said I had to file for a permit before I could schedule an inspection. Went in to apply for the permit, long story short they said they needed to contact the county (ie) sheriff dept to verify what I was doing was legal. First time I've definitely known of a power company going to law enforcement and actually telling a customer that. Waiting to hear back from head inspector hopefully tomorrow what county said about legality. Can't fucking believe this shit. Either way everything came down and all electric work stripped, re installing few basic outlets and shop lights. At the end of the day my and my woman's complete peace of mind is what is truly priceless. My lawyer said after the first of January this year they have started trying to crack down on medical grows, trying to force people into recreational I guess. Knowing I'm legal is great but the threat of an attempted prosecution just isn't something I'm willing to do right now. I feel defeated and like a lil bitch but I'll sleep good tonight. Guess I shouldn't have gone quite so big 24k of flowering 5400 w of veg 8.5 tons of cooling and a shit ton of dehumidifiers, fans, pumps, and other goodies. Next spot I look for will definitely be zoned commercial!
Honestly. I think you got greedy. 30k watts at a residential?

Something else to consider, a miller synchrowave 300 or similar sized welder will draw over 100 amps if it's turned up a bit.

Yeah but who use a welder 18 hours a day straight if he were to say it's a welder causing that. I'm sure they knew what was up. He probably also ran lights at night too during non peak hours.

30k watts at 240v is still like 150 amps. Not counting his Ac, de humidifiers, etc

So what? He has his cards and neither the power company nor law enforcement has a shred of evidence of wrongdoing.

This whole thing is unconstitutional as fuck and a blatant attempt to regulate through the electrical panel.

So @adower why don't you pick a side in this and fucking stay there? Come on, make my day; You think it's cool for the POWER COMPANY to tell you what you can do in your own home? Well? Do you? (Punk?)

I'm running around 25k res in CT, where the average is like 7k. No problem yet, but I have like 3 power companies competing for business. This state has a multitude of suppliers, and I get invites all the time to switch. What the fuck state is doing that to a consumer, that they are reporting to the Sheriff's Department power draw. Unreal. (I'd call a lawyer, pay him his $250 per and check the legality of what those guy's are trying to pull on you) If they do invade on that BS story, which no judge in his right mind will approve a search warrant based on supposition, it will get tossed as an illegal search in a heartbeat. You know what you really have to do, if what this power company does is legal according to you lawyer, is move to another county, state or power company, because the monopoly is over, and find another provider, and that actually is a good threat to use to your present supplier.

Not saying a welder, or any other residential type equipment would totally account for the usage, but having a good cover for your shit can certainly make a difference in whether people glance over you or launch investigations.

If there's a old shitty 45kva transformer on the pole however, thats another story.

Love your avatar pic, lol

Were you taking bets on whether he'd fall off, electrocute himself or drag the whole unit off the mounts?

I'd be betting the trifecta, myself!

They don't need a shred of evidence of wrong doing. I'm sure that when he signed up to use the service there is a clause somewhere that allows them to inspect.

Who cares how many cards he has. It's illegal on a federal level. Are you going to tell them but but I have my cards when they come knocking? If they want to screw with him they will. Unconstitutional? It's illegal on a federal level. If he used less power I bet he could have flown under the radar.

He is buying the power from them. They can tell him Whatever they want. What are you talking about? Is it right? No, but that's the cards he is dealt.

Shoot I dunno what else you can call a 30k watt grow in a residential house. At least get a warehouse if you're doing that amount.
I mean if he's not getting neighbor complaints from smell and noise i don't see the difference. Honestly i feel they want to put a halt to medical grows in all these rec states. My neighbor went to washington state and brought me back some rec weed. The cannabis was absolutely terrible. These med growers all over the country have these big rec companies slaughtered in quality. And I'm pretty sure there upset about it and thats why the op is in this situation. It will get like that for you and me here in cali if we let those fuckers do their thing.

I agree but he stated that he cut corners. My whole point was that he is running a 30k op and the elec company isn't having it. My opinion is he got greedy trying to push the envelope. I'm not calling him a bad person or dishonest. If they want to shut his power off or inspect they will. What can he do, you do or I do in the same situation.

The op even said he made a mistake and should have went somewhere zoned for commercial.

I calculated and built what I thought was about the most amperage that I could definitely SAFELY draw. Never tripped a single circuit breaker. Had an electrician give me an estimate to get up to code and he told me that growers in the state have been responsible for blowing quite a few transformers recently with the constant draw that larger grows require. For the record I had two 12k flowering rooms that never ran simultaneously so the most lighting I ever ran at once was about 17k with 6 hours a day at 12k. I know it's a lot of power but never thought the power company wouldn't want the business. They are the only power company available to supply me with power. Definitely wish I had options

Certainly a life lesson but like I had just said things could be much worse, at least I still have a fat bowl sitting here in front of me. I got my beautiful woman, my awesome dogs, and my freedom. I'm still gonna sleep good tonight even being quite a bit in debt. I'm trying to make lemonade out of these lemons and the worst case scenario is I'm out a few bucks (quite a few bucks).
