ppm?

PPM stands for Parts Per Million. I've never used it to measure anything in soil but I do use it to test the TDS (total disolved solids) of my water. I have a reverse osmosis water filter and I test its efficency every now and then to see if I have to change the filter. Right now our tap water is 350+ ppm TDS (SO cal...yeah), and after it's gone through the filter it's a meer 17 ppm TDS.

So that basically means that for every million units of H2O from our TAP water, there are over 350 units of sediment, bacteria, mold and whatever other nasty junk.

After the filter there are only 17 units of that crap to ever million units of H2O.

I assume the same principles apply for soil analysis. Good luck.

Peace.
